Guest guest
Hi Gobo, Nice to hear from you. That's great that you have a surgery date! I'm hoping for August or September, depending on which surgeon I choose. That's interesting about the artificial sweeteners. I've been making the shakes with water, not milk. I have never been a big user of artificial sweeteners, don't drink diet drinks, etc. so that could be it! That would be a drag! So far it's manageable, so I'll keep on trying. You're right about the nails and hair. I had a VBG in 1990 and it's hard for me to eat enough meat to keep my protein levels up. I should have started protein drinks a long time ago, just for health's sake. I'll be thinking about you and sending hopeful and positive thoughts to the almighty one that your surgery is a huge success and your recovery is a breeze. Well . . . we can ask!!! Let me know how the shakes go. Peace, Robyn > > > Hi Robyn; > Yes, I have a firm surgery date of July 9, 2001. Guest guest
Vickie... The Richmond program actually advises that you not drink the protein drinks. They would rather you get your nutrition from real food, as they believe that it is a more sustainable lifestyle, and will feel less like a "diet"...less like something that you do for a whle, and then stray from. Others on the board disagree with this advice. Many think that protein drinks are essential, because otherwise you can't get all of your protein intake. As for me, I've had protein drinks occasionally...like when I'm running late and I can't have anything else...but that is what I used to do in my "before" life, as well. It wasn't a diet aide so much as a convenience, and a way to get nutrition when my life was on the run. There are many different kinds of shakes, some fruit oriented instead of chocolate. Some that are not milk based (maybe you are lactose intolerant)...so, you probably could find something that works for you. But you don't have to. There are plenty of people who achieve and maintain successful weight losses without them. As for me, I started out at 261, and 5'6". I had my surgery on June 8, and had lost down to 235.5 by the time of surgery. (my 10 percent loss that Kaiser Richmond requires.) So, here I am, four and a half months later...down to 171. In 10 lbs., I will be down 100 lbs. total, including the pre-surgery weight loss. To my surprise, I am at a size 10, which is odd...because I wasn't a size 10 when I weighed much less before. I want to lose another 36 lbs., and it's possible I'll be a 6 or even a 4 by then. I'm trying not to be cocky, because this is the "easy" part...the honeymoon part. My weight loss has slowed down...I've lost about 5 lbs. total in the last 3 weeks...but part of that is being on a vacation where I ate a bit more richly than I normally would...and I probably didn't get as much water...and I didn't get as much exercise. So, now that I'm back to normal, and I have 2 months until I go to Paris...I want to really get back into my routine, and hopefully shed another 20 plus lbs. before I get there. the joy of this surgery is that i can be confident that it will happen, you know? Good luck on your journey, we're here to help. robynnVickie Elleboudt wrote: Hi,My name is Vickie and I live in Tustin CA. I am just starting the process with Kaiser, for the Gastric Bypass Surgery. I am still not sure about having the surgery. At the same time I know my health will deminish if I don't have it. I am 5' 7" tall and weight 315. Anyway my question is, I have tried slimfast, glucerna and Optifast, and they make me feel sick. Cramping and constipation. Have you ever heard of anyone who could not drink the protein drinks? I am already lactose intolerant.I have been reading the posts in this group for the last few weeks and you all are so supportive and wonderful. Thank You, for sharing.Vickie
Guest guest
Vickie, I could presurgery but post, the only protein drink I can now drink is made by a company called EAS Sports. They are the carb control drinks and they have 15 grams per container, 1 gram of carbs and less than one gram of sugar. It is a 11oz container. I used to consume the protein made by Champion Nutrition (Pure Whey Stack and Proscore 100 - both in chocolate) and Isopure Zero but they make me feel gasey and bother my tummy. So for me until this bothers me, that is what I will consume. I usually drink one on most days but there have been days when I have had 2. They only have 100 calories per drink. I hope that helps and I wish you luck with deciding about the surgery. Guest guest
Vickie I havent read the other replies to this yet, so I hope Im not repeating. The drinks you mentioned are NOT protein dirnks. They are only weight loss supplements with questionable benefits. Go to vitalady.com and order some samples. There are some fruit ones and check to see if there are any lactose free ones. Mix them with water!! Milk just adds extra sugar and calories. Richmond does not want us doing protein shakes at all. I didnt do them for the first year. After that I began doing them because I was told by other groups that I needed them. I do one a day. Huggles > > Hi, > My name is Vickie and I live in Tustin CA.
