Guest guest
Any posties want to weigh in? although I am not a postie, I thought the idea was to get around as much as possible to to prevent blood clots and increase the lung capacity after surgery. just a consideration. k
Guest guest
Hi Azin, The advantage of having the catheter is that once you have your surgery you do not need to worry about getting up and having to use the bathroom right away or trying to lift your bottom to accommodate a bed pan. I, myself was in too much pain to even want to think about having to get up to use the bathroom. I also needed the lift team to help me up out of bed after surgery so if I had to wait for them to show up it would be way too late. I had it in for 2 days and I didn't have any problem with infections. They put it in when you are already asleep so you don't even feel when they are doing it. Guest guest
Hi Guys... I've asked not to have a Catheter put in for my surgery. Anyone else opt out of it? I don't think it's a big deal is it? I just don't want to deal with a bladder infection on top of everything else... 5 more days to go! Guest guest
Hi Azin, I have had three back surgeries and had a catheter each time. Once I developed an infection. While having a catheter ain't the greatest thing in the world, neither is having to pee while lying in bed...or getting up a bunch of times to use a commode. And considering the fact that they pump you full of fluids (if you have a lap surgery), the urge to pee may be strong. Guest guest
I'm not sure what was going on while I was in and out of consciousness...but I do know that the second I was able to walk, I asked to have it taken out, and they did it. So, essentially, just a couple of hours after surgery. And I avoided the infection.... Robynn wrote: Hi Azin,I have had three back surgeries and had a catheter each time. Guest guest
Azin, have you ever had an infection with a catheter before? If you have let the surgeon know and they will give you antibiotics while you're in the hospital, and if needed some to come home on. I had many surgeries and one I almost died from, I now know I'm allergic to staples, latex, surgery tape, so they start treating me before the surgery. If you never had the problem, I myself which this surgery was my 14th prefer the catheter. Donna"Azeeeeeeeeeeen! Guest guest
Azin, I don't know what did the Dr. say? I had it and felt good about that because I hurt so bad to get out of the bed. Think about it a little more and the pain you will be in. It was a blessing for me. Guest guest
hey take the catheter out pretty early after surgery so you have to get up. I'd take the catheter! Guest guest
Thanks all for responding....Now I'm having second thoughts about opting out. Good thing is I can change my mind on surgery date. I've had catheters and they always give me an infection. I mentioned not wanting a catheter to Dr. Umbach and he said that he pushed for awhile not to have them put. He said he wanted the surgery to be less invasive but I guess pain and weight made it difficult for folks to get up and pee. He said that it would be fine if I opted out. I'm confident I can get up...especially since I must start walking ASAP. You guys are the best. Merci, Azin > > > > > > Hi Guys... > > > > > > I've asked not to have a Catheter put in for my surgery. Guest guest
I had the catheter in for at least a day, I asked for it to be removed earlier but they didn't want to as they were measuring how much I was peeing and telling me I wasn't producing enough. I can laugh now, but remember how silly I felt walking around the halls with this tube hanging from me and the tickling feeling. I did end up with an infection which sucked having to add the antibiotics to my list of things I was trying to remember to get in my body that 1st week or 2. The positive was the local Kaiser Dr I saw that was impressed at how well I was doing after surgery. He checked the incisions to make sure they weren't infected and said he would've never guessed by my coloring, movement, & attitude, that I had just had major surgery 5 days prior. He left me feeling really good about my choices. I never knew to have or have not was a choice.. I guess I wasn't well informed but am glad the need to get up to pee was not on my list of duties that 1st day. Good luck with your surgery.. I bet you are so excited! Guest guest
Sure, I'll weigh in here! I did not get a bladder infection from my catheter, and I know I was putting out a LOT of pee! is right, they pump you full of a lot of fluid through the IV, and that isn't just with lap either. Mine was open. I was VERY glad NOT to have to get up every fifteen minutes to tinkle! My feeling on any of the issues immediately before or after the surgery is to trust the surgeon! If you don't trust his/her judgement with specifics related to the surgery or immediate post-op care, why would you trust him/her to do things with your innards with sharp instruments? This doesn't mean I agree with everything they teach regarding stuff like nutrition (don't even get me started!) but the surgical stuff? Trust 'em or stay away! Trust me, the catheter is no big deal! You'll have much bigger concerns, and if you DO get a bladder infection, it will be relatively easy to kill. wrote: >I have had three back surgeries and had a catheter each time. Guest guest
Yeah, but you don't want to HAVE to get up within two hours of surgery! No matter HOW cute the lift team guys are! Guest guest
I'm not a "postie", but i can tell you that I know where Azin is coming from! With each surgery that I've had, I have always had a RAGING bladder infection following removal of the catheter. It is a bummer, I know, but I think that I would rather have the big "C" than have to try and urinate every five minutes post-op.
