Plaquenil will mess up the eyes.

Sharon,

Plaquenil can cause toxicity of the retina of the eyes-- but only if you are taking too high a dose. Most often we don't have problems with it, but you do have to be monitored each 6 months.

Plaquenil is hydroxychloroquine-- or "quinine". what happened with quinine is that people would treat themself with it for scurvy-- and lose their vision. Once they stopped the quinine--their vision returned.

Every now and then, I'll read that someone is taking quinine for leg cramps-- and they've gotten it over the counter at a health food store. What happens is that we all fall into the idea that if a little bit helps, a bigger dose will help more. This is definately one of those drugs that you do not do this with.

Take care,

Tracie, My Plaquenil is under doctor supervision. The problem is no one would pay for my eye exams only every two years. We all know with Plaquenil, aka Hydroxychloriquine, we need our eyes tested every 6 months. It has been 16 months for me. Sharon tiodaat@... wrote: Plaquenil will mess up the eyes Sharon L.

I know it isn't. The pressure in my eyes are borderline Glaucoma because I am in the highest range of normal for my pressure. I am worried about that also. I hope to get my new glasses before Christmas. Sharon Mac Tosh wrote: Sharon, that's not

Sharon,

I hope you are seeing an MD- Ophthalmologist--it sounds like you are.

Champva or Champus will pay for your MEDICAL exams on your eyes as often as the doctor wants you in. He just needs to put the diagnosis as plaquenil toxicity or glaucoma suspect (this is what borderline glaucoma is called) and they will pay the MEDICAL portion of the exam. They will not pay the REFRACTION--the part that sets the script for your lenses. (IS "A" better than "B"). That part would be covered each 2 yrs. That or you pay approx. $30 out of pocket for that portion of the exam.

ANY MEDICAL CONDITION OF THE EYES-- GLAUCOMA, IRITIS, UVEITIS, CONJUNCTIVITIS (PINK EYE), DRY EYES-(KERATITIS) CORNEAL ABRASIONS, GLAUCOMA SUSPECT ARE ALL COVERED UNDER THE MEDICAL PORTION OF YOUR INSURANCE.

If you are nearsighted, farsighted, have astigmatism--those are REFRACTIVE problems and not covered under the medical.

Hope this helps you so that you get in every 6 months.

all his billers have to do is use a medical diagnosis with the medical portion of the exam, and the refractive diagnosis with the refraction-- and it's in like flin.

I have Tricare (formally called Champus). The only thing they don't pay for is my glasses. I go to my eye doctor as much as I need to (several times a year) because of the sarcoid flares affecting my eyes. I'm left with a co-pay (25%) that my husband's company picks up with secondary (Tricare/Champus supplemental) insurance. The doctor MUST write that the exam is related to the sarcoid and is not a regular exam. Also, the eye doctor's I go to (large practice) accepts this insurance. I was told I need a script from my Sarcoid doctor for this exam. The doctor was told by CHAMPVA that what ever my regular insurance would not pay for, they would cover all of the exam except for my glasses. Better than I thought.
