Guest guest
My son was diagnosed with the Flu last Wednesday. They immediately started him on Tamiflu and his fever and symptoms have decreased, but his Crohn's, which had been under control, is back full force. He's back on the intro diet, but nothing seems to be helping. Any suggestions/ideas how to help him? I'm unsure if he should be having his usual SCD yogurt? Is that considered too advanced during flares?Ugh, I'm so sorry =( I had the flu/tamiflu combo flare a couple weeks ago. I used Vitamin E enemas to get mine under control, but I have UC so I'm not sure if that would help with Crohns... Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds! Guest guest
Caroline- Please check some of the posts even from last week or two on Fever and Inflammation. There was a discussion. I am only 5-weeks old here, but from what I have seen on this forum, its going to go away if you get back to Intro and slowly work your way up. Its painful, but its going to get sorted out. Other SCDers- Can you help? I am expecting a similar issue. This time of the year, I usually fall sick repeatedly with flu-like symptoms. I get treated with tylenol/Nyquil/Tamiflu etc. The question then is, if someone is on 'remission' with SCD, is it such a fine balance that even flu and seemingly innocuous treatment can throw this balance off? How do you manage?? > > My son was diagnosed with the Flu last Wednesday. Guest guest
Caroline-- I did a quick check: there are posts on recovering from flu (The black guitar maker, Eileen -- may be she can comment from her experience?). Also, do flu shots interfere with SCD?
Guest guest
Andy, I think the whole body is in a fine balance. Since immunity, the way SCD works, and IBD are all related, any disruption of immunity from illness or stress could upset the balance. However, this would happen even off SCD. Hopefully being on SCD makes it less severe. Flu shots, an individual choice, don't affect SCD as far as I know. I had mine. PJ > > > > My son was diagnosed with the Flu last Wednesday. How do you manage??He wasn't on remission - he was asymptomatic at the moment. We discussed that last week and I think it's a very useful distinction to keep in mind. If he had been really in remission,it would have taken much more to knock him off course. Elaine's hunch that it takes a few years of being asymptomatic to getto true remission with SCD seems to be true. (Unfortunately.) Yes, flu or any other illness does worsen symptoms. Sometimesdrastically. Sometimes not. The best advice is to go really easy with diet - return to intro orstage 1 food - all your safe food. And take it easy. As for innocuous treatment - well I personally find tylenol to besomewhat innocuous - but I don't know what is in NYquil orTamiflu - so can't say. Okay - I just looked up tamiflu on wikipedia.Possible side effectsCommon adverse drug reactions (ADRs) associated with oseltamivir therapy (occurring in over 1% of clinical trial participants) include: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea, abdominal pain, and headache. Rare ADRs include: hepatitis and elevated liver enzymes, rash, allergic reactions including anaphylaxis, and s- syndrome.[6][8]So, yeah, tamiflu plays right into general IBD in its various manifestations. It's not the best drug for us, apparently. As for NYQUIL, if you are going to take it - take the cold and flu liquicapsrather than the liquid, as it contains many fewer illegal. Just somesorbital as far as I can tell - OTOH, the possible side effects for it are also not good for IBDers:NyQuil Multi-SymptomAll medicines may cause side effects, but many people have no, or minor, side effects. Check with your doctor if any of these most COMMON side effects persist or become bothersome when using NyQuil Multi-Symptom:Constipation; diarrhea; dizziness; drowsiness; excitability; headache; loss of appetite; nausea; nervousness or anxiety; trouble sleeping; upset stomach; vomiting; weakness. So, yeah - these two obviously can cause a lot of problems for people with various IBD ills.MaraMy son was diagnosed with the Flu last Wednesday. Guest guest
My dh had the swine flu a few weeks ago. He treated it with 2 helpful products: N-A-C, which is N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine. It is an antioxidant & Glutathione Precursor. It was recommended by a doc in Houston, we received the info via an email. It protects the lining of the lungs from possible bacterial invasion and I am sure it kept him out of the hospital (he has really bad lungs from decades of smoking – ugh). The other product we both took is Lauricidin. www.lauricidin.com I upped my daily dose and never got sick from the flu. The higher dose gave me a herx reaction (die off big time) but it wasn’t bad at all. Hope this info is helpful. Oh, and we ate chicken bone broth soup everyday for 10 days! I’ve never cooked so much soup in my life! Carol CD 21 yrs SCD 5 yrs From: BTVC-SCD [mailto:BTVC-SCD ] On Behalf Of Andy Ram Other SCDers- Can you help? I am expecting a similar issue. Guest guest
Also, do flu shots interfere with SCD?I think getting a flu shot would be much less harmful to the gut then actually getting the flu and having to take meds. I have the flu last year but knock wood - I got the reg. flu shot and no affects from the shot and no flu yet - doc did have me take TONS of liquid d and some NAC last year and I went intro/stage 1 as well - took me WEEKS to recover, so doc thought shot was a good idea this year eileen 23 months scd > > > Caroline-- I did a quick check: there are posts on recovering from flu (The black guitar maker, Eileen -- may be she can comment from her experience?). > > Also, do flu shots interfere with SCD? >
Guest guest
My doc is against over-vaccination. She is a DAN and she supects that vaccines may cause intestinal trouble and authism. She told me to use a homeopathic remedy and also to buy some complements and took them as soon I detected any flu symptoms in order to boost my own immune response. I did not believe in homeopathy, but I took it anyway. I did not catch the flu when both my parents were ill and taking antibiotics. My advice would be to be very cautious with vaccines. They used to contain thimerosal as a preservative. They also contain adjuvants with hidden secondary effects. Guest guest
Well, I just got both the regular and H1N1 shots! Got to wait and see the reaction. I just got panicked after having fallen sick repeatedly last year -- but I was in 'remission' then. In any event, apparently prefers his UC/CD patients to get flu shots because of the flare-up problems! > > My doc is against over-vaccination. Guest guest
I got both the H1N1 and regular flu shots and didn't suffer any side effects (UC related or otherwise). I get it every year because the last time I had the flu it eventually made my UC get so bad that I was hospitalized for almost 2 weeks. Though I have found that since being on SCD I very rarely get colds/flu. I'm not sure if it's diet/immune system related or the fact that I just don't go out to restaurants and such anymore. How do you manage?? Andy, Our gut biology is such a delicately balanced ecosystem, any way. Even " normals " have this issue -- my husband, who eats 6000 calories a day to maintain his slender frame, and who eats darned near anything he wants, can be thrown off for a few days by cold or flu or a respiratory infection. Regrettably, for those of us with an even more delicately balanced system, we have to watch the so-called " inactive " ingredients in the OTC and prescription medications like hawks. Last year, I had cancer surgery. I was on pain meds for four months. To my profound dismay, every one of them had illegal sugars and/or lactose in them, something I had not thought to check before the surgery. I had to take them... but the gut cramps I had from the illegals were almost worse than the pain would have been. It took me quite a bit of time, lots of yogurt, s. boulardii, and rigid adherence to the diet (there are some things, at eight years-plus that I've been able to relax on -- and no, I won't mention them on the list because everyone is different) to get things back in line. Then I got knocked over backwards, having to do the clean-out for the colonoscopy. I can tell you that the longer you are on SCD, the less likely you are to be knocked over by the occasional issue of a medicine having an illegal so long as you aren't taking the medication long-term. (And no, I'm not advocating getting rid of the meds prescribed specifically for your gut.) I didn't start having issues with the pain meds until I'd been on them over a month. There was a virus running around last month. I had three days of the squirts, and a bunch of nasal congestion, and then I was fine, as far as my gut was concerned. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
