Guest guest
I read you're posted and just had to comment. First I am so glad your surgery is over and you're doing well. I related to your post 100%!! I to had open/lap surgery. Dr. Umbach was 3/4 done lap then had to switch to open. My surgery also took about 6 hours. My husband was a wreck in the waiting room; he had no idea why it was taking so long. When I came home I was in so much pain I also had to sleep in my recliner, I did not sleep in my own bed for 2 weeks!!! I was one very unhappy camper. There was a couple of others who had surgery around my time (Ramona was one, Elena) and they seem to just fly right through lol no pain ,no whining ,,not me whine, whine, whine, at every Kaiser support meeting I went to. I was sick every time I ate, I could not drink water and thought I would never again be able to (which was wrong) I was nauseated (sp) no matter what I ate. The funny thing is the only thing that went down was pasta!! Something I was not supposed to have. Dr. Umbach was like you need to eat something so eat it!! I never drank one protein shake, just the smell made me want to puke. My husband was so worried he tried to sneak in into all my food, even my oatmeal!! He gave me oatlmeal one morning and I tasted the protein power right away ,,lol we still laugh about that. I am happy to say I did make it past all those icky feelings and I went on to lost 175 pounds and have maintained it for almost three years now, give or take 15 pounds up and down. I went from a size 32 to a 16. Would I do it again ? YEP!! I would, but for me the first 4 weeks were plain hell,, ohhhh not to mention the hernia I got 2 months after surgery which meant another surgery 6 months later,, long story . I won't go into that one. I just wanted to thank you for sharing, and bringing me back there so I can be really grateful for were I am now. Guest guest
Hi, I just read your message to Kristie. Dr. Umbach never mentioned the fact that there was a possibility of open surgery as opposed to lap which is what he said I was getting. I'm scheduled for the surgery this Wed. 10/12. Doesn't the doctor know before he starts, why would they have to do open? Marita M > > I read you're posted and just had to comment. First I am so glad > your surgery is over and you're doing well. Guest guest
Marita- Dr Umbach assisted in my surgery and I am pretty sure in our preop class as well as the day that i signed the surgical consents it has you sign for both open and lap, with the intention of being lap, but once you are under and they are in there, if they feel it is best to proceed open for the best result and saftey you, that is what they do................this is the best of my recollection................sometimes they go in and old surgery scarring or surgerys you have had in that area might prevent them from doing it lap...............its just one of the risks as far as i understood it colleenone800q2 wrote: Hi, I just read your message to Kristie. Guest guest
Colleen, thanks for the info,,,,I checked my binder and you are right, I do remember reading it. I have never had any surgeries so hopefully I will be able to have the lap. You sound like you are doing great, that's always good to hear. Thanks again - Marita > > > > I read you're posted and just had to comment. First I am so glad > > your surgery is over and you're doing well. I related to your post > > 100%!! Guest guest
> Shell, Thank you so much for posting and letting me know your experience it helps to know someone has been there (open/lap). I am moving around a lil more but I am still in pain. The food is working but it is hard to get the liquid all down. It's nice to know that there is a end to the pain and soon I will be happy for my decision. Thanks for taking the time to post this. Guest guest
Marita, I was scheduled for a lap procedure. I was a perfect candidate my Dr. said. I had never had surgery so no problems with exisiting scar tissue, my weight was proportioned well so there was no problems. Unfortunately there was human error. The anestisiologist put two tubes down me and my surgery was 90% done well when the Dr. went to staple my new pouch he hit the second tube stapling it with the pouch. He did not feel confident he could get the tube out through the laproscopic incisions so he opened me to get out all of the tube that was going in and out of my new pouch. Always know there is a possibility of being opened. I think it is rare but my luck sucks. Good luck... Guest guest
Marita, I'm not a doctor but I'm sure with any surgery there are not gurentees. Dr. Umbach did warn me it might happen. I was almost 400 pounds so maybe your smaller and he did not mention it because it won't be a problem for you. I don't think there are ever " for sures " in surgerys > > > > I read you're posted and just had to comment. First I am so glad > > your surgery is over and you're doing well.
