I believe its a general assesment of kidney health... both creatnine

and BUN are normall cleared by the kidneys, and a healthy balance is

maintained..when theres something going on with the kidneys, it can

throw thes levels out of wack...

Molly's ration is high because of low creatnine rather than high BUN

levels. low creatnine is actually better than high, as high

indicates kidney failure... generally low levels are not considered

significant (however thats in an otherwise healthy person, i dont

know if it would be a concern in Molly's case, thats a question for

the doc). Creatinine is created by muscle metabolism, so I would

assume someone with a mito disorder may naturally have lower levels

anyways? (does this make sense?)

Some medications that cause the ration to be high are

tetracycline, glucocorticoids, antibiotics, and steroids, so if she

takes any of these it could be an explanation (although I think they

raise BUN rather than lower creatinine... i think the only

abnormality is that Mollys creatinine is low, as her BUN levels look

really good! )...

my understandind (and this is a VERY loose understanding) is that if

a high BUN:creatinine ration is caused by high BUN levels it can be

cause for concern, however if its caused by low creatnine (which

Molly's are) its not that concerning... I dont know though, as

there are alot of other factors that play into it...

Dawn,

My boys have NEVER had normal Bun/creat ratio..

I am told over and over again, that it's not concerning.

Theirs has been as high as 90- when sick but run chronically high around 50 something always...

It's the actual BUN (urea nitrogen) & Creatinine that count....

If it's those are high, they indicate kidney failure.

Caden used to have pretty high BUN levels until

about age 3.

His Creatinine was actually really high (like 4.0) once and was rushed to UK for kidney failure! Those labs were taken a few days before we got the results back.. Like 3 days before they sent us to UK ( labs were sent out ). They were down when we had to take him over. Still up, but not in kidney failure and was followed by a nephrologist for a couple of yrs. He had a hydronephrosis too.

NOW, both Caden and Carsn have LOW creatinine -always low-average is 0.2.

Also low BUN's too-average of 4.

I don't worry too much if they are low. Although, like we have discussed before about these "so called" reference ranges.. Why aren't they starting at 0-infinity...... It'd save a lot of extra ink the computers/printers have to use flagging these "abormal" findings. Why are these disregarded reference ranges even existing???

Quote: High BUN levels suggest impaired kidney function. This may be due to acute or chronic kidney disease. However, there are many things besides kidney disease that can affect BUN levels such as decreased blood flow to the kidneys as in congestive heart failure, shock, stress, recent heart attack or severe burns; conditions that cause obstruction of urine flow; or dehydration.

Low BUN levels are not common and are not usually a cause for concern. They can be seen in severe liver disease or malnutrition but are not used to diagnose or monitor these conditions. Low BUN is also seen in normal pregnancy.

How was Molly's ANC ? I take it, that it was ok.

How is her fever?

elevzated BUN/Creatinine ratio?

What does this mean? Anyone know> Molly's tests (only some of them) came back and her bun is 9N (normal 7-25) and her creatinine islow at .4L (Normal .6-1.3) and her bun/creatine ratio is highat 22.5H (normal 6-20). I would not be worried about this at all. Bun and creatine are indicators of the

health of the kidneys. But since BUN and creatine are both fairly normal, I

would not worry. You get more worried when they are high.
