Guest guest
Congrats on your surgery date! The first week after surgery, I could eat so little that it was almost impossible for the brain to comprehend. I had bought a six-pack of yogurt, 2-3 bottles of juice, etc., about 6 cans of soup, and on my fifth day post-op, I had to give away most of it or pack it in my suitcase. From the three meals I had at the hospital (lunch, dinner, breakfast the next day), all of which are a 4 oz. juice, a cup of broth, and a 4 oz. jello, I had brought home 3 jellos and 3 juices and still had two of *those* left over on the fifth day, too. Don't go buying a lot of stuff pre-op. You won't believe how little you will have to eat to be perfectly satisfied, and as a result, how relatively few choices you need. Wait until you see how it is to buy stuff. By six weeks, my shopping (I live by myself) consisted of things like buying two bananas, one potato, 8 cans of soup, a 24-pack of sugar-free popsicles, a quart of orange juice and a couple of Smart Ones dinners (plus I already have jerky from http://www.jerkyusa.com/). That's the whole week. Kind regards, > Hi, all: > > I am scheduled to have surgery July 24. Anyone else? Email me please! > > Also: has any post-op tried using a vegetable juicer for their liquid diet? Any 1st week smoothie suggestions, like some of the shake mixes? > > Thanks! > > Blair

Guest guest
Wishing you well, Alison! My son, Asher, has a cecostomy scheduled for mid-Feb in Boston. I really hope things go well for you. Anne R
Guest guest
Anne, Thank you. I'm sure you are in good hands with Asher's surgeon, but there is a much better procedure that can be done that is similar to a cecostomy. It's called an appendacostomy. With it there can be no leakage or granulation tissue as the appendix is dry. Also there doesn't have to be a button, valve or tube in place to hold the appendix open. Once the site heals up (about 4 wks) there is a tiny opening about the size of a top of an ink pen. It requires no dressing as the appendix can only move liquids in one direction, that being in not out. Each day or every other day you would insert a little catheter into the appendacostomy opening and connect it to a bag of tap water hung from an IV pole or shower rod. You can just sit on the toilet and let the water flush out the system until all that is coming out is clear. Once done the catheter is removed. I had not heard of this before, but my surgeon always uses it over the cecostomy as it is much less messy and infectious. The cecum is actually right above the appendix. The surgery takes about 20 mins.

That is a week from tom. I was really thinking it was going to be sooner. My mitochondrial doc. is leaving on the 13th and he is the one who was wanting this done asap and is so very concerned. We have left a message for him to see if he will be available via pager while he is away. I spoke with my surgeon this morning and he was ever so nice. He had spoken with my GI and gotten the colonic manometry reports. It shows that the left side of my colon is non functioning. He said that he can't say it will be 100% successful because my pseudo onbstruction is caused by the mito and that is very unusual. He feels confident that I will have at least 80% success or better. If I'm not satisfied or this surgery isn't affective then I can always have the appendacostomy done later. He said that if I was his daugher he would do the partial colectomy first as it could be a cure for the CIP. That was my answer. I've been praying so much about this and have complete confidence in my surgeon. I also was able to get the anesthesiologist who I've used in the past and really knows me well. We are working on airline arrangements now for next Thurs. Thanks for your prayers. Guest guest
Congratulations Luci, Keep up the good work and keep on losing weight before surgery. The more you lose before surgery the easier it will be on you during the recovery. The 14th is just around the corner and will be here before you know it. Guest guest
Pam E. I had Dr. Baggs in Richmond, he's great and I had lap. I had many surgeries for different things and thought I would have to have open, but Dr. Baggs with Dr. Parks assisting was able to do lap and it went so good. This surgery was so easy to so many different ones I've had. So try not to over worry, of course some worry is normal and get your sleep. You'll be so happy when your on the other side. Guest guest
I had insomnia the night I finally decided to ask my doctor for the surgery. Something so momentous has to effect us somehow, I guess. BTW, now that I've made the decision, I'm sleeping like a baby. ;-) granela52 wrote: > > >> > > Just got back from seeing Dr. Fisher (Richmond), I am 5lbs under > > my > > > goal weight, have stop smoking going on 3months, blood pressure > is > > > great, and I am 1 1/4 inches shorter then what I thought I was.> > > > > > Beside all that, My Surgery is set for 11/14, not 11/17 and I > will > > be > > > having Lap instead of Open....> > > > > > I am excited, scared, confuessed, and thanking this support group > > and > > > my family for helping thru this.> > > > > > Luci> > >> >>
Guest guest
> Pam E. I did not stay close to the hospital the night before. I was freaking out the whole time also. Honestly for me the drive (75 minutes) helped me just kinda say ...
