Is Lap Band coming to Northern CA Kaisers?

I was on the Yahoo Banister group and saw a posting of a gal who

claims that she just participated (as an post banded patient) in a

teaching session for Northern Californian Kaiser gastric bypass

surgeons just 10 days ago.

Does anyone know anything about this? Does anyone know if Kaiser will

be doing Lap Bands in the future?

I do know that Dr. Dennen was going to a lap band orientation of some sort that

is what he told me. I do not know where it was.

Yes, Kaiser NorCal is exploring the possibility of adding the lap band

procedure. No word on when (or if) it will be offered to patients, or

how the choice of procedure would be made or qualified for.

Any reason why? Just last winter, Dr Dutta from Fremont seemed to be

dismissive of Lap Band (maybe just my perception).

There is a population of patients for whom the Roux-en-Y is not

appropriate (borderline BMI with no co-morbidities, too surgically

risky, age, unrelated health issues, etc.) who need some sort of

medical intervention, to control their obesity. Typically, lap band

patients lose less total weight initially but long-term studies seem

to indicate that there is little difference between the procedures,

when it came to maintaining weight loss several years post-op.
