The clinic I went to said only chewable for 6 months, the reason being that

they started disbursing from the time you chewed them. I was told that with

such a small surface area in our new stomach, less vitamins are disbursed.

When I saw the surgeon, and his assistant, they both told me chewable.

Dear Crystal,

I get 90% of my vitamins at puritanspride.com and right now they are

having a buy 1 get 1 free, or buy 2 get 3 free sale. Their vitamins

have worked fine for me since the beginning (after blood tests every 3

months for the past year and a half, my levels are all still perfect)

and they are quite reasonable... and no, I don't work for them...

hahahaha

Hi

Sorry if this has been asked before , but there are thousands of

messages & I'm still new to these Yahoo threads lol..

I had a Duodenal Switch May 04, so still a DS baby myself, but am

taking Vita4life vits 'for now'.. I have also been recc ADEKS as a

alternative..

BUT .. I've heard about some peoples bloods showing very high levels

of VIT A..and this can affect the foetus'..

I plan on trying to conceive after 12 months ..

1) Has this happenned to anyone ?

2) Should I Not take Vita4life/ADEKS ?

3) Did you take folic acid or anything else in particular leading up

to starting to try and conceive ?

4) are there any other precautions I should be taking ?

5) are there any DS pregnancy specific sites ?

And any other advice greatly appreciated.. Also what time & day are

your chat sessions ?

Cheers Gwen x

Hi ,

I just had my orientation last week out of SFF and was told about the 1200 Calorie meal plan and to give up sugar, caffeine, and soda due to its carbonation which we will not be able to have post-surgery from what I hear. This last weeek I just started a mega-multivitamin, iron (daily) and vitamin B-12 once a week. I need to add calcium citrate to that routine.

These were what were suggested. I hope this helps.

Thank you so much for the info. What was orientation like? Does everyone need to lose 10% weight? Did you have to weight there? Do you have to wear a gown or do u just weigh in your clothes you wear? Should I bring something to class? Any pointers will help.

HI ,

Welcome to our group. It depends on where you are assigned as to what the weight losses requirements are. Before it was 10% in all the facilities but now it is changing. Depending on how much you weigh sometimes the surgeon will require more than 10 %. IT is a group meeting and you weigh in your street clothes when you first come into the meeting. It is very good to bring your support person with you. Be prepared to listen to a lot of information.

As far as % weight depends on where you are going for orientation and what your weight is I guess it can differ from Richmond to SF. Yes you weigh in that day and that's when it starts to count toward your 10%. You wear your clothes, not a gowm and I know different clothes weigh a little different. So you could wear heavy stuff, but the idea of losing the 10% is so you learn to have control, and learn along the way the things you'll need to know so you will have knowledge and will be able to make this a success for life. Bring your binder, water, pencil and paper for any notes you want to take. Hope this helps. Start a journal on Orientation Day, it will help you keep on top of things, for your weight lose, what you eat, your emotions and more. Hope this helps. Donna wrote:

I feel that Prenatel vitamins are NOT ENOUGH. Don't make the mistake

that I did and be lax in taking good quality vitamins. The docs

downplay the vitamins and aftercare nutrition. I'm over 2 years out

from surgery and have been at goal weight for over a year.

I got blood work at 6 months, 1 year, and 2 years and anytime there are

deficiency problems. I've kept copies of all my blood work and compare

it, and look for long term trends.

My recommendation is to take a DRY form of vitamin A,D, E, & K, called

ADEK's. Since these vitamins are fat soluable, and the fat in our food

is not metabolized, we need a water soluable vitamin for our system.

Certain companies make the Dry or water soluable formulas. You can

find ADEK's at Costco ($20.15 for 60 tablets). I take a minimum of 2 or

3 tablets a day. I also take a dry A & D (10,000 i.u. each) of 4

tablets a day. THe most important thing is your calcium. I take a good

quality calcium citrate....It must be citrate, not carbonate.

Carbonate needs stomach acid to be absorbed, and we have very little of

that. I take 1500 - 2500 mg of calcium citrate per day. I take it in

no more than 500 mg doses because that's all we can absorb at one

time. I also take a couple of good multi vitamins per day (pre natel

is also good, and additonal zinc, and vitamin c. I take one or two

sublingual vitamin b12 with folate. These are inexpensive and can be

found at Trader Joe's. I also take L-Carnitine each day. I purchase

some of my vitamins from Vitalady on-line, some from Costco, and some

from vitamin stores. Vitalady has great quality products at a

reasonable price. She and her husband had WLS surgery 5 years ago, so

they understand our needs and are helpful.

Monitor your particular situation, and be an advocate for your own

health. I find that you're not going to get much support from the PCP

on the vitamin and nutrition end after surgery. Visit other yahoo

groups such as the nutrition, vitamin, and graduate WLS groups. You'll

learn alot of information that may be helpful to your individual

situations.

I'd be happy to answer any questions from my experience.
