Question on dental work

Hi there--

This is , and I have a question... I am in the process of

having lots of dental work done, I am going to get partials

eventually... I had 3 teeth pulled and 3 filled last week. Well the

back tooth, on the lower left side needed a filling. SO the dentist

filled it, and he also put in two pins. Since then I have gotten the

condition that he called galvanism. I was getting electric shocks

from that tooth. And it does hurt. I went back to him, and he

polished them, and said it should take care of the problem.

Well it hadn't taken care of it, the shocks did lessen in severity,

then I developed a metal taste in my mouth. On Sunday, I got the

shocks back and they came with a vengeance. I made it back to the

dentist today, Wednesday, and he once again just polished them, and

said it should go away with time. This metal taste is just awful. It

tastes like I have a mouthful of Reynold's Wrap. OMG!!!!!!

What I wanna know, is does anyone have any ideas for me as to make

this go away, and has anyone ever had this happen to them. This

shocking sensation is just about doing me in. I did call the MD last

week, and he did prescribe Darvocet for the pain, and it has helped

somewhat, but this is for the birds...... HELP????

Thanks,

from Iowa......

, I haven't much advice to offer but I am really with you on the teeth pain part. Ouch!!! Can you put some of that tooth desensitizing stuff on it? I have always had sensitive teeth and actually avoid the dentist. Sometimes i think the fact that we have been in pain for so long makes us lots more sensitive to pain than the regular patient. ANd sarc also likes the face, sinuses, gums, glands, etc. There is no reason that they shouldn't be giving you something to numb the pain. hugs S.das97 wrote: Hi there--This is , and I have a question... I found a product--toothpaste actually that really helps. It's BIOTENE SENSITIVE.

Biotene is one of the primary products that helps with dry mouth problems, and it comes in toothpaste, gum and a gel as well as a mouthwash.

I was majorally surprised with the new Sensitive formula toothpaste--it works so much better that Sensodyne or the Crest Sensitive formulas.

The other trick I've found when i have dental work done is to take an antihistamine before I go in--that way I don't get the swelling and inflammation going in the sinuses that press on the nerves for the teeth!

If I have problems after the novacaine wears off, then more antihistimine will generally knock it out quick. I'm thinking that the old Sudafed that was so low dose worked very well last time.

Because of the new laws on antihistimines-- (out here in CA they use them as a base for the crack cocaine) so you now have to ask the pharmacist to get it off the back shelf-- but it does help.

Take care,

sorry you are having a bad time of it. I worked with an oral surgeon for about 5 years. What you are having is sometimes called battery reaction. The metals in your mouth are reacting to each other. I suggest that you get some Vaseline, put some on your finger and rub it all around your tooth. You can do this several times a day if needed. I have had the same thing happen in the past and know it can be very upsetting. Hope you feel better soon. Judy in PA

I have, as part of neurosarc, a condition called trigeminal neuraglia.

It is from inflammation of the facial nerve and can sometimes be

brought on by dental work. It feels like electric shocks, can be

confused with tooth pain, and is VERY painful. You may want to get

another opinion to rule out TN. In any case, when it was bad for me I

took Tegretol, an anti-seizure medication which helps with that kind

of nerve pain. There are others out there as well. Normal pain killers

do not stop this kind of pain. Also, when I go to the dentist I take a

strong muscle relaxant. My GP recommended it to avoid flareups from

dental work. You may want to look into that in the future. Just don't

plan to drive!

I also have neurosarc on my trigeminal nerve.....last year I had all of

my upper teeth pulled because they were just breaking away....amazingly

after I had them pulled and things had settled down again, my face pain

had diminished considerably......I still have it but its not has

painful has before having my teeth pulled. I also know that this was a

temporary step, since in the past couple of months the pain has come

back more severly again.

Hi, . I talked to a dental assistant I know. She asked if the fillings were metal; if they are, they act like a battery & that causes the shocks. She didn't comment on the polishing, but said that you might have to replace at least one of the metal fillings with resin. She said they use metal on the back teeth because it's cheaper & many insurance companies require it, but if it's causing you this much pain, your dentist should replace at least one filling with resin, at little or no charge. If nothing else, it's good p.r., since they don't someone telling everyone about the bad experience they had with their dentist! Hope you are staying warm & that the pain soon subsides.
