I have not been past level 2, and its been a year since starting SCD. I need

variety in my diet, I think its unhealthy to be eating such a limited range of

food and veges that are cooked to death.

Help!!!! I am craving some different food!!!!!!!!! Has anyone had better luck

using coconut flour to make things, ie. can it be tolerated on lower levels???

Naomi,

What happens when you add something new? My husband does better with almond

flour and coconut flour than the other nut flours. Even pecan. I am not sure

why this is, but I do know that pecan, walnut, and cashew tend to cause more

wind and some discomfort like he is going to regress. I use it occasionally,

but not much when I do. He still won't eat the yogurt--we think he is still

having problems with milk protein (not the lactose) so he takes a probiotic.

I commend you for staying so diligent for an entire year with limited diet! I

know DH would not have done it more than 1 month! ; ) What foods/spice/herbs

are you able to tolerate?

Has anyone had better luck using coconut flour to make things, ie. can it be tolerated on lower levels???I tolerate coconut flour much better than almond flour, and many fruits and veggies. I think it's just something you'll have to try for yourself. Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)No meds!

What are you eating?

Are you keeping a food diary?

No, I haven't been keeping a food diary, I will start. Thanks so much for the

tip. I mainly eat: scrambled eggs, yoghurt, grape juice jello, legal canned

tuna, other meats (including roast meat and grilled streak), avocado seems to be

ok, chicken and carrot soup, cheese, pumpkin. I have tried introducing well

cooked baby spinach but unsure about it... I think I may delete the avocado

again.

When I start something new I will have gas, and at worst, diarrhoea.

Naomi,

Do you immediately stop the food, or do you continue small amounts for a few

days to see what happens? Does it continue on to D? I think you may have

something else going on. Do you know if you have/have you investigated whether

you might have a yeast problem?

My husband just started LDN, but isn't really seeing much difference. According

to different people who use LDN, it doesn't work if there is a yeast problem.

He is experiencing some symptoms he now admits to, that lead us to believe that

he might be having a yeast problem. I have ordered some s. boulardii which is

supposed to help with yeast.

Marilyn, if you want to chime in here, any dosage/frequency/additional things to

try would be really appreciated!

Did your die-off include D? This is a big concern for DH.

We did the 'spit/saliva test'. Have you any experience with it and is it a

valid test?

How long have you taken the s. boulardii? Is it a long term thing or is it

something one should stop after a 'course'? On the GIPro site it said something

about a 3-4 week 'course'.

About how many is 'several'?

Thanks for the help Marilyn. My DH isn't happy with the trial and error

approach and wants something more 'scientific.' I feel like I am working in the

dark, need to be a mind reader, and then be clairvoyant in making suggestions

and recommendations! ; )

Amelia,

I have not tried the spit test. I have heard pro and con on this test --

some people swear by it, others swear at it.

>> Did your die-off include D? This is a big concern for DH.

<<

I legitimately do not remember. What I do remember is that I had

been doing very well -- almost no urgency, and significantly improved

stools, but I would have unpredictable rounds which might have been due

to cross contamination. I started the boulardii in the post-Katrina era,

and don't, unfortunately, have a food diary for that period.

What boulardii did for me (and remember, I'd been healing for 4-5 years)

was get things fully functional and predictable. These days, I get up,

take my boulardii, and then wander back to the bathroom because within

half an hour of taking the boulardii, I'll have a trophy. Same thing in

the evening.

I would think that boulardii would be unlikely to cause diarrhea, since

it has been used as a treatment for traveler's diarrhea.

>> How long have you taken the s. boulardii? Is it a long term

thing or is it something one should stop after a 'course'? On the GIPro

site it said something about a 3-4 week 'course'. <<

Keep in mind that the boulardii does not colonize the gut the way the

probiotics from our yogurt or from homemade sauerkraut does.

I've chosen to use it on-going -- I know the GIPro Health says a 3-4 week

course, but I found that for me, whatever was causing my remaining issues

would come back when I went off it.

>> About how many is 'several'? <<

I'd tell him 5-6. That way, if it's shorter, he'll be delighted.

Yes, I understand that. Have you read the s. boulardii article on

Wikipedia? It's pretty good, and will give you some information to

consider -- and decide how to present. I'm so glad I don't have to be

Harry's researcher! I admire your dedication!

Amelia-

What do you make with nut flours? Cookies etc or have to found ways to make

Naan/Roti?

I wish I had a partner like yourself to take care of me :) Tell Sanjay that we

think you're great!!

Amelia, I am sure if it were my DH he would want a nice clear-cut

scientific approach, too. However, there really isn't one, because we

are all different.

Last week I was updating my acupuncturist on all that had gone on

since I last saw her, and she said with a twinkle, " You are your own

science experiment, aren't you? " Well, we are!

Andy,

Thank you! You are way too kind. If you actually were my partner, I believe

your opinion would be that I am more like a 'nag!' : )

I haven't had inspiration for roti/naan yet. But since I am moving to India,

the next important job I will have -- after finding a driver-- will be finding

an awesome cook. In fact, that is one of the things I look most forward to --

someone that can help me bring to fruition my ideas in combining SCD and Indian!

I adore Indian food, but my mother-in-law is very very heavy on the rice and

starches. I want to be able to make lovely dishes for us that can leave that

out, but let everyone feel satisfied too. When I make a new discovery, I will

post and let you know!

I have not tried this, but had inspiration the other night. If you are decent

in the kitchen with spices, you might try popping some mustard seeds in oil,

adding turmeric, chopped onion, and what other type of spice you like best --

cumin seed/ground, coriander, curry leaves, cinnamon, fresh ginger (use a micro

plane and watch your fingers!), fresh garlic (a garlic press is great!), etc.

to make a nice fragrant mix. Let this cool and add it to a plain muffin recipe

without the honey or drastically reduced honey to make a savory muffin/dhokla

type thing. I have soaked lentils and then re-dehydrated them and ground them

to a flour, but have never tried using it to bake with. I am really hoping I

can find a way to use it with coconut flour and I am not sure what else to make

dosa/idli/etc.

The above suggestion is pretty advanced because of the seeds, so adjust as you

see fit, but I think you get the idea. If you don't have a good muffin recipe

let me know I have a good one that we like and it is pretty easy and versatile.

Amelia,

Many years ago when I found I had to go GF, I experimented with all

kinds of things. One pretty decent muffin I made was with cornmeal

and garbanzo flour; of course I thought I was OK with corn in those

days. So I think the lentil flour ought to work. I found that I

could only use about 25% garbanzo flour with the other or it was too

heavy and had a weird beany taste and slick texture. Maybe lentils

are milder but I'd err on the side of caution with how much you use

at least at first.

  • 3 weeks later...

Naomi,

How are you doing? We kind of stopped with your discussion and I was wondering

if you have been able to try anything new or if you have discovered that an

unresolved issue like yeast is the problem. What about the coconut bread, did

you give that a try?

Sometimes this is really tough when we have to work in the dark without much

competent medical help.

Hope you are o.k.
