Guest guest
The urine results were positive for Strep B, which is common in pregnant females but not non-pregnant males (5 in 100,000) cases. But Strep B is a commensal and present everywhere. The doc was surprised at the results but still wanted me to take an antibiotic till I meet an urologist next week. For an antibiotic, I requested Penicillin for lower C.difficle risk (SCD website). My GI wanted me to take Flora Q (Acidophilus, thermophilus and few others) and Florastor (S. boulardii) when I am on antibiotic. I plan to substitute with SCD legal acidophilus and S boulardii. I will probably wait for 2 more days before taking antibiotics. I don't have fever or anything. I am vacationing and I would rather not bleed here... In any event, I wonder what's going on?? Happy New Year!
Guest guest
The doc wants me to take Amoxicllin, and not Penicillin because the former is better and is from the same class. But Amoxicillin seems to cause C. diff colitis. Should I be more forceful about this? > > > The urine results were positive for Strep B, which is common in pregnant females but not non-pregnant males (5 in 100,000) cases. Guest guest
Did he check for the sensitivities of the B strep to see if it was responsive to penicillin? If it is not- then amoxicillin is necessary. Antibiotics don't " cause " C diff infection. Basically, they would upset the balance of good/bad bacteria in the gut, and if C dif is there, it will proliferate. Clindamycin is the big one here for C. diff, but any antibiotic can also do this. I think the broad spectrum ones are worse, and the penicillin/amoxicillin ones are safer. Any chance you could have cleared this on your own? You did say you felt better. What about a repeat urinalysis and culture to see? PJ > > > > > > The urine results were positive for Strep B, which is common in pregnant females but not non-pregnant males (5 in 100,000) cases. Guest guest
PJ- I still have minor discomfort and frequent urination issues. I just hope it doesn't become a major issue... It is interesting/confusing: I had a red/white coloration on my gentials which is disappearing with using topical antifungal. I don't know where the Strep B came from? Did I have both bacterial and fungal infection at the same time? Unlikely The doc was really surprised -- 5 in 100,000 cases of Strep B, and that too which is nosocomial? Something else is going on here. -Andy. > > Did he check for the sensitivities of the B strep to see if it was responsive to penicillin? Guest guest
Andy, Strep B showing in urine can be a contaminant from your skin, and this would apply to either gender. When testing is done for Strep B in pregnancy, it's done on parts you don't have, not in urine, so I'm not sure exactly what your doctor is referring to. When I had some funky symptoms last year, my urine tested positive for Strep B, but in small amounts, so my doctor and I tried treating it for a brief period and when a 2nd test showed the same small number a few months later, we decided not to treat it, and the symptoms went away. Did your doctor do a culture and sensitivity to see which antibiotics would be effective for this bacteria ? Sue R
Guest guest
Hi Andy, It is possible that your urinary symptoms are just your body changing, healing, getting used to a new diet. If you are not experiencing fever, pain, burning etc, then I would ask the doctor if this is truly an infection that needs to be treated with antibiotics. Has it gotten worse over the past week? If you've never had a urinary tract infection before, well it usually is very painful and gets worse quickly. Maybe you do have an infection, but it sounds like your body is taking care of things just fine without antibiotics. It's worth to discuss with your doctor. I have had a lot of urinary changes and symptoms while on SCD. I think for the first time in my life things are normal now (after 2 years). I did have a lot of urgency off and on especially early on in the diet. Before being on SCD I did 3 rounds of antibiotics for a 'urinary tract infection'. Each time at the doctor's they said it tested positive for some bacteria. My main symptoms were frequency (about every 2 hours) and urgency, but not really any pain. I wish I could go back and not have taken them. My doctor said after the 3 rounds that it probably was never an infection. Bacteria can be present on your skin and get into the sample they test. Just a thought. I know you must be frustrated right now. Hard to make sense of it all when doctor's don't even seem to know what they're doing Kat PS: anxiety over this issue could be making your symptoms worse too, I always got like that. Had a bit of frequency/urgency problems, then got anxious about it for days to weeks, it only made things worse. Once my doc told me it was probably not an infection and it's fine, I calmed down, and symptoms went away. > > > The urine results were positive for Strep B, which is common in pregnant females but not non-pregnant males (5 in 100,000) cases. Guest guest
That's right. I have mild discomfort while urinating but I go every ~2 h or so and it is usually urgent. What concerns is that I have intermittent, mild pain in my right, lower groin area which is of concern. I have an overall discomfort, which is not normal. Regards to Strep-B, the doc also suggested that it could be from external skin or something -- but it was very high 100,000 CFU/ml. So, we do not know what's going on. Some others from the forums mentioned that they had Candida as underlying cause for similar issues, which got triggered when their gut flora changed. They had to resort to natural remedies to get rid of this. I am holding off on antibiotics at least till the weekend and trying Oregano oil, D-mannose and Cranberry pills. Meeting a urologist next week. > > Hi Andy, > > It is possible that your urinary symptoms are just your body changing, healing, getting used to a new diet.
