Guest guest
Grace, although she is only 2, is very much like this. She is a completely different child when we are home verses out in public. We have just started seeing an OT for different reasons, but she has said Grace clearly has Sensory Integration Disorders. For her she is not comfortable with different people. She is so afraid of someone touching her, that she will shy away from any situation where it may be possible. When we are away, Grace will rarely mutter the smallest sound, it is like she is in her shell. At home she is a typical two year old, temper tantrums and all. Her Early Intervention Coordinator and her OT believe it is because some of the problem also is that she is now figuring out that she is "different." She is old enough to realize that she does not talk like kids her age do, they don't have to wear a cooling vest to go outside, and she has never seen anyone else with a g tube. I know she notices it when someone is staring at her cooling vest, trying to figure out what it is. At home nobody cares about the differences in her, so that is where she is comfortable. We are now doing a full Sensory Integration Evaluation, hoping that if we can pinpoint her difficulties we can overcome some of it. Her OT believes that if we can at least start with her being able to tolerate touch (by someone other than a close family member) she will start to socialize better with others. Best wishes.
