Guest guest
Hi All, I was just wondering what is being used to thicken drinks by most people out there. Will uses Thick-it 2, and has done great with it, but we were wondering if there is something with fewer calories. Will is drinking over 4 quarts a day right now, and that means he's getting somewhere around 1000 calories a day from the Thick-it alone. We have Drs that are already not happy about his weight, so just looking to see if there are any other options. Thanks J
Guest guest
My son uses Simply Thick, which is a clear gel. It's great!!! No taste! It's expensive but you can order a sample pack at first to see if you like it. The gel comes in individual serving-size packets, that you can carry with you anywhere. Those work for 4 oz each. Or, you can get the bulk packets that work for 1 quart. I like to buy the honey consistency packets, then I can use one for 8 oz, when my son needs nectar consistency. When he needs it even thicker, I use one packet per 2-6 oz, depending on what he can handle. (One " honey consistency " packet per 2 oz is the same as pudding consistency.) Simply Thick has a website, www.simplythick.com I am not connected to the business in anyway! :-) My son would NOT drink anything with the starch-based thickeners though, so Simply Thick has been great for him. One word though - Simply Thick works with almost everything, EXCEPT store-bought chocolate milk, which already has a starch-based thickener (stabilizer) in it. It CAN be mixed but it's really really hard, and not worth the effort. We use chocolate pudding to thicken chocolate milk, and that works great. (Tastes good too!) Speaking of stabilizers - Simply Thick works well in smoothies, to prevent separation. Just a little can go a long way for that (just experiment in the blender). I used one individual packet for about a quart of smoothie, I think - but it's been awhile so I might be remembering wrong! But it was much less than I was using for very thick drinks at that point.
