Stimulant Laxative?

Can anyone recommend a stimulant laxative for my chronically constipated five year old son? I asked the GI about prescribing him Miralax, but he says it's a stool softener as well, and is afraid it would make him have diarrhea. His stools are already pretty soft, he just needs the stimulant part. Thanks!

God bless,

If the stools are already soft I can ssume the problem is moving the

bowels along right? is on Reglan and miralax. The miralax

softens it and the reglan gets things moving. She takes it everyday.

It helps with peristalsis (sp).

Dear e,

My daughter uses Miralax. Just be careful, over doing it will cause

alot of loose stools. Otherwise it has helped alot.

Thank you Dawn. I'll write that down and ask the ped about prescribing it. Yes, he has a problem with motility. My mother in law is a geriatrics RN and she said to give him a few drops of Senokot every day in juice. She sees plenty of old folks at the end of their lives who also have a motility problem. I might try that if I can't get any Reglan.

I've read so many good reports on Miralax here, that I was discouraged when the GI said no. I think if nothing else works, we'll revisit the issue with him in Nov when we go back. For now, he suggested good 'ol Milk of Magnesia, one tablespoon every night before bed. Well, that was too much, and he had blow-outs like crazy! One at my husband's company picnic even! Oh that was embarrassing!! Now I cut it back to one teaspoon every night before bed, and in the last three days, we've had nothing. There must be a happy medium somewhere! One and a half teaspoons every day? I don't know. We'll figure it out.

e,

It sounds like he doesn't have hard stools, so he doesn't really need a laxative

- rather he needs something to speed up the motility (i.e. like Reglan). Some

docs don't like to prescribe it b/c of side effects. My son, Asher, has GI

dysmotility and we're hoping that a specialist we see in November will have some

more ideas!!

I would not use a stimulant laxative. They are not good for daily use. Mirilax

is a laxative, not a stool softener. It works as a laxative by pulling extra

water

from the gut and adding it to the stool. Because of that, you can get loose

stools. But, you can use any amout at all. You could use even a teaspoon a

day. I would suggest, though, that you ask about reglan. Reglan can cause

neuro symptoms in some people but it will increase motility. Low doses of

erythromycin are also used for this. Stimulant laxatives can make it

impossible to go without daily use. Your body can come to need them and

then make ever increasing amounts necessary. Have you tried prune juice?

Can you call the GI and tell him that Milk of Mag does not work and you would

like to TRY Mirilax. It is a wonderful thing for constipation. There is a new

generic Miralax. My six year old takes half a capful a day. She also takes daily

antibiotics (which would make most people have diarrhea).

Hi,

e

The only

thing that has worked for us consistently is using a bisacodyl (Dulcolax)

suppository every morning before breakfast. Then after he eats, he goes to the toilet for “toilet time”

which is reading time to him.

Within a half hour he goes and it’s usually done for the day. This was prescribed to him by a

motility GI doc. We used to use

Miralax with it, but if he goes consistently then softness is not the

problem. Prior to our toileting

routine, he was being hospitalized quite often for Golytely cleanouts (flush a

laxative solution through an NG tube during a hospital stay). He hasn’t had to have a Golytely

cleanout since we started this program.

Good luck,

Cindy (mom to Seth and Ben both mito)

e,

I was told by a GI doc for my son, Lucas (8 yrs. old) that 1/2 of a tsp of Milk of Magnesia can make a big difference. My son also has motility problems we used Miralax in the past and it stopped being effective. We now use Milk of Magnesia although we too have major blow outs. Another thing my son uses for motility is Mestinon. It is used for Myasthenia Gravis patients but have found it to be somewhat effective. We have had less vomiting episodes with it. HTH, Loriann
