Although our neuro hasn't a lot of experience withthis, he's looking into it. , Barbituates do deplete the body of vit D and calcuim, folic acid, vit K and biotin. I read this in a book called The Nutritional Cost of Prescription Drugs by Ross Pelton, R.Ph. & B. LaValle, R. Ph. Perspective/Morten Publishing, 2000 Not getting enough calcium can aggrevate epilepsy as well. The body can only absorb and use calcium with proper amounts of Vit D. My daughter was on phenobarb for almost 5yrs, she just took her last dose mon. She experienced severe side effects from it, and ended up with the gtube because her swallow got so bad. She has been on Keppra for 2 yrs now and it has done a much better job controlling her seizures, without the sedation. She also has tonic and tonic clonic seizures with a tendency toward status. It was really difficult watching Chelsea seize all the time and not knowing what to do.
