Guest guest
Hi all- when I first started SCD I felt a lot of hypoglycemia. That seems to have evened out now (my body adapting to my extremely low-carb diet?) but I feel so hungry. Ravenously hungry, sometimes, where I at the beginning of a meal, depsite my best intentions, find myself not chewing properly. I eat three times a day, often 3 eggs for breakfast, some youghurt wih Cinnamon, too, eggs or meat for lunch and a meat patty or two for dinner, a small amount of squash or eggplant with lunch and dinner. Could this still be some kind of carbohydrate withdrawal thing (and for the record, I don't come to SCD from eating a lot of carbs, I just had to give up brown rice products). I can't judge whether I've lost weight (i.e. whether I am getting enough food)on SCD because I experience so much fluid retention that my true weight is hard to judge. A few weeks ago, when SCD seemed to be really helping, I had no fluid retention and felt like I had lost some 5 lbs, now with my recent flare I'm retaining a lot of fluid so I'm a bit confused about my true weight. Any experience/thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks- Lilian
Guest guest
Lilian Since starting SCD I eat more frequently than three times a day; probably about 7 times. It's the only way I can maintain energy, but it also has the benefit of filling me up so I don't fall into the overeating frenzy (which only aggravates my upper GI symptoms). And small meals also help my upper GI work better, which is always a plus since it doesn't work so well these days. I eat something every 2 to 3 hours. I prepare normal sized meals, but eat them in two parts. And I throw in a small snack in the late afternoon, which is my low point of the day energy-wise. Just a suggestion. Now that we don't eat complex carbs our bodies need frequent refueling. Kim M. SCD 5+ years >>>>>>>>>>>> ...... Guest guest
Lilian, When I first started SCD I was really hungry all the time too. Probably for about the first 3 months. I just ate constantly. And I DID lose a lot of weight. I think it was carbohydrate withdrawal for me -- I was not a big carbohydrate consumer either (well, I mean I didn't eat much bread, or rice, or grains, but I did eat a lot of sugar, so that might have been part of it for me). I would bring cheddar cheese, bananas, and hard boiled eggs to work with me, and eat something every hour at least. I also made a banana-egg bake (3 bananas to two eggs, and cinnamon, which I'd bake in the oven for an hour -- it tasted weirdly like bread pudding to me), which I would eat with a little honey drizzled over it to keep my sweet tooth satisfied. After the first 3 months, I think all the bacteria in my intestines re-organized themselves and figured out how to digest this new diet and turn it into fat, because I gained all the weight back that I'd lost even while I stopped being hungry all the time. (I skipped yogurt after awhile, and had to get special cinnamon, so if you're having a flare-up, you might take a second look at those ingredients in your diet.) Ann 1a. Thanks Kim, this sounds like something that would work for me. I find that I don't do well with large meals, and smaller meals would work with my work schedule, too. I've found through a bit of experimentation that part of the hunger seems to be for carbs; including just a little bit of banana with my eggs, for example, seems to satisfy better. This isn't a sweet-tooth craving, as I'm not really a sweets-person; sometimes it feels more like an attempt to get my serotonin levels up or something. I'll start thingking it terms of small meals (the opposite of Pimentel's suggestion, of course, but hey, whatever works..). Thanks again!
