No suggestions for the pain but I did want to share my experience.

Now you haven't started ATDs, right? Sore throat is part of the

condition, even though it's also a serious warning sign to a dangerous

side effect from the ATDs. I did something a bit dangerous, and decided

NOT to tell my dr. about my sore throat till after the routine cbc

(complete blood count) came back four weeks after starting ATDs, because

I knew that this dr. would use any excuse to yank me off the ATDs.

My sore throat (never got that bad, felt mildly like strep) lasted for a

few months and, even though I have my own Graves rage stories to tell, I

couldn't yell at my kids for the duration - very educational and

humbling. (Though as they say, if you want to get somebody's attention,

whisper.)

Take care, Fay

I have sore throat -- don't know if it has anything to do with Strep?

Any home remedies -- I have been gargling salt water, sipping green tea, took

oregano oil.

Anything else that you guys know will help reduce the symptoms and heal?

Thanks.

I found these SCD legal remedies on AustinSCDFriends.com. It is from

a link that also includes remedies with illegal ingredients – I need to

let the web owner know so that can be remedied. I copy & pasted the legal

ones. I have only ever used a hot tea made with equal parts honey & lemon

& hot or boiling water, to sip. Take your pick:

Carol

Apple cider vinegar (ACV) According to Dr. Jarvis in

his classic Folk Medicine, the remedy to use to get rid of a sore throat

is to gargle with ACV. The acidity should kill the bacteria on contact. Mix one

teaspoon to 2 tablespoons in a glass of water. You can mix it as strong as you

can stand it. Gargle one mouthful every hour, swallowing afterward. Repeat

twice each time. This treatment can cure a streptococcic sore throat in 24

hours. The acid in the ACV is very helpful in soothing and minimizing the sore

throat, and, if you swallow it, the extra potassium is also beneficial. Note: After using this remedy be sure to

rinse your mouth with water to prevent the acid from eroding the enamel on your

teeth.

Combine one teaspoon of apple

cider vinegar, one teaspoon of cayenne pepper and three tablespoons of

clover honey in a glass of warm water. Gargle as often as necessary.

Ginger Peel the skin from a small ginger

root. Slice the root into thin coins and place the pieces into a small pot of

water. Boil the pieces to make tea. The tea should turn a yellowish (straw) or

tan color. Add three tablespoons of your favorite honey to sweeten the tea. Sip

the hot tea slowly. The tea gives a sharp tingle to the throat after swallowing

it. After you sip it, gently clear your throat. This tea also works for trying

to get your voice back after a cold. This

remedy compliments of Cathy Ekaitis.

Grapefruit seed extract This extract is a powerful

all-around antimicrobial product and is an excellent disinfectant and

antiseptic. Add five drops to a glass of water for a soothing gargle.

Honey/apple cider vinegar Mix ¼ cup of apple cider vinegar

and ¼ cup of honey. Take one tablespoon every four hours or as needed for pain

relief.

Honey/lemon juice Take several tablespoons of this

mixture several times a day. Let it sit in your throat a little while. This

remedy will also help alleviate that irritating throat " tickle. "

Lemon Add the juice of one lemon and one

teaspoon of salt to one cup of warm water. Gargle three times a day for one

minute.

Mustard Grind one tablespoon of mustard

seed and combine with the juice of half a lemon, one tablespoon of salt, one

tablespoon of clear honey, and 1 1/4 cups of boiling water. Leave this mixture,

covered, for 15 minutes and use as a gargle.

Water/salt Mix a teaspoon of salt in eight

ounces of quite warm water. Gargle the whole mixture several times a day. This

will increase the blood supply to the area by washing away mucus and dilating

capillaries, thereby enabling better circulation of infection-fighting

antibodies.

I do honey and lemon in hot water and lots of peppermint tea. I also stay away

from dairy to keep the amount of mucus down (if you're having that along with

the sore throat). I juiced half a pineapple and some ginger a couple weeks ago

that seemed to help my sore throat.

I hope you feel better!

Andy,

Usually a sore throat is caused by a throat tickle. Meaning, there is a

post-nasal drip. This is usually because your sinuses are blocked/swollen and

having trouble draining properly--which you can have WITHOUT also having a

stuffy nose. The constant drip irritates the throat and encourages bacterial

growth.

You need to keep the sinuses unblocked. The most effective way is with Sudaphed

(active ingredient pseudoephedrine hydrochloride). It will include illegals and

can cause problems for men who have prostate problems. DH isn't aware of

prostate problems, but he also knows he cannot take Sudaphed for very long (like

only 2 doses a day for a couple of days) before he has difficulty. Sudaphed is,

according to my mother who is a former nurse, the only true decongestant. It

can also leave you feeling 'dry' and wanting water. The other thing you can do

is to apply a very hot compress (wet and wring out a small towel and heat for 1

minute in the microwave, carefully place in a plastic ziplock bag, use another

towel to protect the skin from the extreme heat of the bag) to your face around

the forehead, eyes (near the nose), and on the face either side of the nose

about the place of the bridge of the nose. After the compress starts to feel

less warm, switch to a very cold compress (a quantity of frozen peas in a small

sandwich bag). Repeat this a couple of times (put the peas back in the freezer

or get fresh), and you should feel them open up, even if you didn't have a

traditionally stuffy nose. The down side to this is that it doesn't last long,

so you will need to do it several times a day. Another useful thing is

eucalyptus oil. You can mix a few drops into steaming water, and inhale it. If

you use a bath towel over your head to form a tent, it will trap it in. Be

careful with the oil as it is an essential oil and they shouldn't touch the skin

in full strength. The heat of the steam might temporarily make the nose stuffy,

but it should go away and soon and overall help because of the eucalyptus and

the moisture. Also, rinsing the sinuses with warm water will clear them as

well. My dad used to use a tiny vessel that looked like a slender tea pot. He

knew how to pour the salt water into his one nostril and make it come out the

other. This is an art I never could master. I used a small squirt spray bottle

(like an Afrin type bottle) that had just salt water in it. Inhale sharply as

you squirt. I used to be able to purchase them in the UK, but can't find them

anymore. When the kids were little I would mix a mixture of salt water (about

1/4 tsp salt with 1 cup of warm water I think) and dip my little finger into it

and then let it drip into their nose. You might be able to use an eye dropper

to do this too. It doesn't feel nice, but it will help heal the sinuses and

break down the mucus and make it easier to clear.

Good Luck! I am suffering the same. DH seems to have licked it a bit better

than myself--unusual to say the least!

Zinc lozenges always used to help my sore throat the best and keep me from

getting sicker. Maybe we can formulate an SCD legal lozenge? Maybe zinc

powder, glycine powder, and honey?

I'd cook the honey to hard ball (at least) stage, allow it to cool, then

add some flavoring (peppermint?) and the zinc. I'd drop it in small

dollops of parchment and let cool, then peel off and chill.

Thanks, Marilyn. Do you want to try it? You're much better at these things

than anyone else! Bet we could sell it.

Well, if I get a chance. I'm headed for Atlanta on Friday, and have to

get breakfast casserole and about five batches of bread made. And a few

other things.... which includes getting my washing machine fixed. Ever

tried to get ready for a trip when your washing machine is

busted?
