Guest guest
Hello to all and happy new year I have been having problems for the last 4-5 months. I had been on the diet for about a year at that point and decided to see if I could speed up the healing process. I tried some acidophilus powder that was not scd legal and also some bifidus powder as well. Almost straight away one or both of these caused problems. I had a massive flare up which could only be stopped by getting back on the prednisolone steriod enemas which I had been free of for the past nine months. I managed to get things under some semblance of control but nothing like how it was before. Stools were still loose and I my energy levels started to deteriorate and I began to suffer from heartburn/reflux. I initially put this down to candida (I had a furry tongue and cracked mouth as well) and went on a course of Nystatin, the Diflucan and then Nystatin again. These seemed to help with the heartburn in the short term but it soon came back. Docs started to notice my iron levels falling (i have 3 monthly blood tests because of the azathioprine) and said I was anaemic. I had been getting progressively more fatigued but thought it was diet related so didn't go to the docs about it until they noticed the anaemia. Was put on ameprazole and iron tablets which have really helped but as a side effect of the iron tabs have caused me to have very loose and frequently urgent stools. Doc thought that it could be a stomach infection (H.Pylori) but it looks like the results have come back negative. What I don't know is whether it was just a lack of iron over the year that I had been on 'just past intro level scd' that had taken its toll or whether something else is going on. It seem to be too much of a coincidence that the problems started when I tried the new probiotics and had to go back on the steriods. Has anyone else had symptoms like this and does anyone know what it is that has caused it and what I can do about it. Thanks, Mike UC 7 years SCD 1.5 years

I have had massive flares without illegals so I cannot imagine what Bifidus may do. We all need to learn our bodies and our individual lessons. > Almost straight away one or both of these caused problems. Pain in the Heh.. kinda apt for an IBD/Diet forum anyway. > I managed to get things under some semblance of control but nothing like how it was before. Stools were still loose and I my energy levels started to deteriorate and I began to suffer from heartburn/reflux. Same thing happened to me that is why I went on LDN. > I initially put this down to candida (I had a furry tongue and cracked mouth as well) and went on a course of Nystatin, the Diflucan and then Nystatin again. Makes total sense. > Docs started to notice my iron levels falling (i have 3 monthly blood tests because of the azathioprine) and said I was anaemic. At the risk of sounding like a broken record (and I am not a doctor) the body hoards iron and it feeds the bad bugs. If you can get off the iron (maybe, maybe do the safer types of IV's.. really depends on your levels) also don't stay on the 'zole type drugs too long.. there is data out there that it actually induces bacterial overgrowth. > Doc thought that it could be a stomach infection (H.Pylori) but it looks like the results have come back negative. As much as we despise this sometimes a short dose of antibiotics can help. But my first bet would be the iron. > What I don't know is whether it was just a lack of iron over the year that I had been on 'just past intro level scd' that had taken its toll or whether something else is going on. In my experience with the many many flares I had.. it's like a multi layered thing. The Bifidus could of triggered you and then your body acted like a domino effect that made you sensitive.. and symptoms just kept getting toppled over. Don't be so hard on yourself. As Mara says healing is non linear. Just do the diet.. it takes time. Try and stay supplement free.. Give LDN a shot if you aren't getting out of the abyss. Jodi. I guess I was looking for a definitive reason for the downturn in my progress but what you say makes a lot of sense when I think about it. Mainly it is good in a way to think that I've not done some irrepairable damage. I am going to have to stay on the iron tabs for a bit I think to get past the anaemia issue and then once i'm topped up try to eat more liver! It definitely helps not being completely exhausted all the time. Chin up and best foot forward and all that! Mike
