Ten Months

Each month when I go to do an update, I continue to be more and more amazed at how awesome this surgery is and what a great gift it was in giving me back my life. I had a hard time with recovery from the bowel obstruction/hernia repair surgery – but am feeling much better from that and very thankful. I managed to get a sprained ligament in my back, that I am still being treated for and am eager to have that healed so I can feel 100%. The ortho doc believes the sprain occurred from having the two surgeries within 8 months and the back muscles having to make up for the lack of stomach muscle strength.

I am getting ready to go on vacation to see family and friend that I haven’t seen since before the surgery. I am excited, yet nervous at the same time. I had occasion to see other people recently that I hadn’t seen since before the surgery and it was a first for me. Went to my dh’s company picnic and while it was nice to be told I looked good/better, etc. – it was a bit overwhelming, as they were in SUCH shock and some couldn’t believe it was me. While the compliments are nice – it is much nicer to hear them once and then go on with the business of having fun or whatever it is we are doing at the time.

At nine months and three weeks, I hit the “ideal” weight that Dr. Maguire had set for me. As of this writing, I am 3 pounds below that. He indicated I may have to eat more. Funny thing is, when I eat more, I lose more. I’m not going to borrow trouble, but I’m glad that I have things like Creon (pancreatic enzymes) to take, should I continue to lose and lose too much. Honestly, the thought has crossed my mind – if we have an 18-24 month window, how long am I going to continue to lose? I have quite a bit of leeway to go until I would be “underweight”, so I’m not going to worry at this point.

I’m wearing mainly size 6 and some 8’s – I even have a pair of size 4 pants that fit. I haven’t been this size since probably junior high and its wonderful, but kinda freaky. Some people were worried I looked to thin, until they saw me and I really don’t look that thin. It simply amazes me that I am wearing these sizes. I was glad to read that there is usually a bounce back of 10-20 pounds and if I could end up wearing 8’s or 10’s long term, I would be extremely happy.

There are so many things that I can do now that I couldn’t do before surgery – it just BLOWS my mind. I will list them all out at my one year update and then I won’t do monthly reports – only annual ones (aren’tcha glad? Hee hee). But, one thing I noticed that is so weird – my armpits actually HAVE pretty deep pits. Shaving isn’t near as easy as it was when I had meaty armpits – but I’ll take that harder shaving any day.

I would do this again in a heartbeat, even though I didn’t have the smoothest road. I feel grateful for the road being as smooth as it was and count myself very fortunate and blessed. If I can answer any questions for anyone, please holler. I’m excited for all of you who are traveling this wonderful journey and for those of you who are beginning the journey – it is such a grand life!
