Dear List:

Does anyone know is abruptly stopping all digestive enzymes (Houston

Pharmaceuticals) can cause any problems like yeast over growth. I took my

daughter off the enzymes and every night she has been telling me she doesn't

feel right (sick). I have been giving her the charcoal pills. I wanted to take

her off for a week. And then restart a small amount of just one. I had her on

no fenol only for about two weeks before stopping completely. She was still

showing hyperactivity. I think she has calmed down but I think she is feeling

bad. Any input is helpful. Thank you, Eileen Brown

After reading the posts about adding supplements too soon, I'm bit chicken

about rocking the boat, as well as curious about how digestive enzymes may be

helpful- with regards to keeping undigested foods out of the colon. Has anyone

tried them along the way and what are your experiences? I'm in month 9 of SCD,

doing well, thankfully.

Reading Marilyn's post about Celiac and sleep really got me thinking about food

intolerance in general and poor digestion. I had many of the symptoms mentioned-

bloating, poor sleep, fluid retention, for the past several years which I

attributed to perimenopause- but who knows?

Then when I read about digestive enzymes- I thought- maybe they would be a good

idea....or not...

Any advice?

Thanks,

PJ

I tried them for vegetables and it didn't go well.  Let's say the food digested but came back up--without being too gross.  I just did better at that time taking it slowly.  I may try again in the distant future.  Everyone is different.

I had a bit of stomach pain with the digestive enzymes, so I abandoned them. I can't remember what exactly I tried, except that it was SCD legal. One capsule of L-glutamine did the same thing to me, so I'm reluctant to continue with those as well.  The GI Pro-health probiotic works great for me though.

Hey PJ..

You know your body and your intuition and that is what it is important at the

end of the day.

I will share with you some observations though.

I think all my time hanging online and also talking to SCD'ers, I have found and

am totally comfortable saying this that the people that stay supplement free the

longest get better sooner.

Now with that said on the GAPS protocol Dr NCM uses a couple of key supplements.

Some react, others don't. No one size again!

Her suggestions are Fermented Cod Liver Oil (no it is not the same as non

fermented. The A/D ratio is perfect as to what Nature intended)

She uses Betaine HCL (if one has low stomach acid- the test for this can be

excruciating)

Digestive Enzyme

And a Probiotic (her's is illegal).

I could not do any of these LOL. Never tried illegals on the GAPS protocol..

But I also went dairy free and focused on bone broths.

Went to Kraut juice.. stopped fighting needing to take probiotics and pulsed S

Boulardii on and off.

With time I intro'd Fermented CLO.

Today I take a Thyroid Supplement which contains Illegals (I tolerate it

beautifully. And I feel so much better)

I take Thyroid Meds

I take Vitamin D3

Borage seed oil

And liquid homeopathics..

Some sporadic supp's here and there when I need something.

I found that trying supplements equaled me fighting my body.

More and more I understood what Elaine spoke of and Dr NCM as well as other

about being supplement heavy.

I learned about Whole Foods and their roles in keeping me sturdy.

My Omega Juicer is my favorite SCD purchase by far.

If you do decide to try the enzyme. Use and 8th and take it after about 3 bites

of food. And work up. Slow and steady..

Jodi

Digestive enzymes can be helpful, particularly if your body isn't producing enough enzymes or bile. But taking digestive enzymes won't guarantee that your food will be completely digested; there are other factors at work, such as our gut ecology.

Some of us have bodies that tolerate supplements, others have bodies that are super sensitive. Some people find digestive enzymes help, others see no change, and still others find their bodies reject them.

My opinion, based on my own experiences, is that you can restore your gut ecology over time by staying on SCD and eating foods that don't stress your digestion or your body, only using a minimum of supplements -- probiotics, vitamins and minerals. Digestive enzymes aren't required to achieve better digestion and seeing less undigested food come through.

When I started SCD I saw a lot of undigested food; my doctor said this was normal for me given my upper GI malfunctions (not producing enough bile, low in pancreatic enzymes) and wasn't at all concerned about this symptom. I found I couldn't use digestive enzymes, had to use a minimum of supplements (just L. Acidophilus and some minerals and vitamins) yet still healed enough over the years so that now I only see undigested food on very rare occasions and with specific foods, foods that I don't eat too often anyway. This is normal, according to the medical literature. It is certainly normal for me.

So, all we can do is learn what others find helpful, or not, do our research, then give things a try if we feel whatever it is may help, but start off cautiously and with a low dose. Just in case...

I've learned that my body does best with a minimum of supplements and medications. Food choices alone helped me get a systemic candida overgrowth under control, played a critical role in healing, and keeps my chronic digestive symptoms minimal. It did take time, but it worked for me.

Thank goodness I discovered SCD.

Jodi,

I fully agree with you, and have decided to go with " mother nature " for now.

I do take vitamins, occasional calcium, and fish oil. I had vitamin deficiencies

at the beginning so I needed these. I tolerate the yogurt and legal probiotics

just fine.

I do bone broths almost daily and I am becoming more aware of the power off real

food.

I do think slow and steady wins the race.

I may try the enzymes at some point, but I don't want to rock the boat.

Thanks,

PJ

Thanks Kim, I agree that the best thing is to just stay on SCD. I've noticed

steady improvement over time.

Jodi, are you still taking this?

Also, can you clarify the difference between this and regular CLO?

IMO, it is important to take vitamin D3 in the winter when there is so

much less sun and we are apt to be in it less.

Would you take this for the A/D vitamins, or for the omega 3s, or both? Or something else? I was helped with fish oil in the past, so I'm looking for a good supplement to start. I live in Canada. How about that Olympic hockey

game on Sunday eh? Woohoo! Anyway, I really like “Supreme Digestive

Enzymes” from Trophic. They are very effective as there is a mix of enzymes

to help you digest fats, milk products, protein… If you only need them for protein, you can

get Bromelain.

Several companies make them.

Hope this helps.

does anyone have a good legal digestive enzyme to recommend?

OMG, that hockey game! I could hardly watch it. It made my gut feel worse. But did watch the last bit. Yes, I know those enzymes. I've taken them before. I just don't know which ones I need. I can't tell that they've made a difference. DarleneIntestinal DysbiosisSCD 12 days
