I have been waiting to see if this info appeared on the list, but it

hasn't so far. According to my surgeon, who attended the ASBS

convention earlier this month, it looks like the protein malabsorbtion

is no longer a problem. Neither is the ADEK problem. In fact, he

just posted a note to us yesterday saying that, if we are eating a

normal, balanced diet, then we do not need to take protein or ADEK

suppliments. And only if bloodwork shows problems then do we need to

adjust our diet. Another person who had an appt. with him today was

told that 60 grams of protein a day should be sufficient. He does

encourage us to continue with the calcium/vit. D suppliments,

anti-oxidents, and iron for us women.

I am wondering if anyone else had heard this from their surgeons yet?

Please keep in mind that this is something you should discuss with

your Dr. before following. But I for one am glad to be able to eat

normally and not worry about getting in enough protein, as I have had

a very difficult time stomaching them.

Hope this is good news for alot of people!!!

No - I haven't heard any news like this from my surgeon yet (Dr. Gagner/NYC),

but one of Dr. 's patients did forward his e-mail to me... pretty

interesting! I remember when I wanted the DS Dr. GAgner stressed that he had

seen so many more people with protein deficiencies that he really, really

STRESSED this matter. This was back in November 2000. I had my surgery on

January 25, 2001 -- and at Mt. Sinai it is still standard to recommend

75gms/in the first three weeks than 80-100 or so thereafter.

I almost always get my 'protein goal' of 80 gms/day from my food. But, if I

don't I have one of the shakes or bars. It is pretty infrequent nowadays,

though.

I'm going to forward the e-mail to Dr. G and see what he says! I'll let you

know what he says when he gets to back to me (he still owes me an e-mail

regarding post-op insurance coverage! LOL)

all the best,
