It varies, but many children are helped. Dr. Bernard Rimland, ARI,

has researched this area. Also, www.megson.com for info on cod liver

oil. www.kirkmanlabs.com has many articles on the subject. Our

experience:

CLO - my child's fine motor control & reading improved, as Dr. Megson

predicts. Bonus - I don't need special glasses to drive at night any

more!

TMG - DMG's precurser. Calmer, more focus. (Me, too, I love this

stuff.) I didn't notice Ian improving as it was gradual. Within 3

days of stopping, his attention span dropped again, so we resumed

use. The improvement isn't huge, but it's good to have.

Nu-Thera (extra B-6, Mag, plus multi-vits & mins)- had to wait until

he could swallow the pills (the new, little capsules). Didn't see an

improvement (too gradual), but did see moodiness promptly return when

stopped, so started up again.

Folic acid - we used extra for awhile - learned about it on this

list. Really worked fast on hyperness! As diet progressed, and then

chelation, hyperness pretty much vanished, as we don't use a separate

supp of this any more.

These kids have so many health prolems that high levels of vits and

antioxidants in general are probably a good idea. But experience

varies, as I'm sure you will read on this list.

and ,

We originally contacted a DAN Dr. who suggested these supplements and

have since worked with Dorfman (nutritionist) and have had periodic

bloodwork done to check all levels. Ian's bloodwork came back with

everything looking great and CBC counts were excellent too (good

kidney/liver function). It just seems that not very many people are

supplementing this much.

My son has become a capsule taking machine. I am finding that I am

giving him usually 4 or 5 capsules of something to take with every meal,

then a gamut of liquids to boot. I currently give him :

3 capsules of Nu-thera

1 vitamin C

1 Zinc

1 selenium

1 CoQ10

1 milk thistle

1 pycnogenol

1 taurine

4 gelcaps of CLO

1 pro bio gold

and then:

1/2 tsp flax oil

liquid calcium

1/8 tsp nystatin

1 tsp colostrom gold

and then:

betime meds of trazadone, clonidine and paxil

and I am soon going to be adding DMSA for chelation.

Does anyone else give their child all this stuff? Is there a point where

there are just too many supplements to be safe? He is progressing,

however I feel like I am sometimes pushing the envelope and one day he

is just going to shut down and refuse to take anything.

Is it really necessary for a young child to take all these vitamins?

My boy is 2.5yrs old and he is not on any meds or vitamins except for

flinstone vit.

How good can this be for a child?

Does it really work?

What are the long term effects?

Many of us use a number of supplements because the gut & immune

dysfunctions cause malabsorption and other nutritional issues.

Addressing these issues at an early age is important as it impacts on

growth, vision, behavior and general health. Labs can run nutrition

panels to determine if supps are necessary. Some of us just try one

thing at a time to see if it helps. SNT is popular because so many

ASD people need high levels of b vitamins and magnesium. CLO is used

b/c of gut damage from the DPT. Omega supps are also widely used.

On the other hand, many parents don't go beyond a multivitamin.

Karyn Seroussi, for example.

Any supplement should be verified gfcf, and, ideally, free of

artificial colors & flavors.

Info about studies on the nutritional needs of people on the spectrum

is available at www.autism.org and www.kirkmanlabs.com, as well as

many other autism-specific websites.

Hi

I could never find a good multi vitamin I liked .. Plus I wanted to use

the CLO so I chose to just do everything individually.. I could have opted

for a Beta carotene without fear of toxicity with Vit A , but I didn't like

some of the other ingrediants and minerals.. So I do the

CLO

B's are tough .. He does not really do very well .. Although I realize

half the kids do very well with high b's..

C's chewable or buffered

E soft gel

Minerals Citramin II.. I didn't want any copper or iron

Plus some calcium chewables//

Have tried many more things than this.... also use probiotics. But my list

is not really extensive and I have used DMG... pretty regular until

recently..

I get in those fats though and try hard to balance them... Plus it depends..

Do they eat all kinds of veggies and different foods. My son is starting to

eat leaf lettuce.. Plain .... It is a miracle.. It really is an

individual thing.. kelly

Both the CLO and soft gel Vitamin E I give at night right after he goes to

sleep. I just break open the soft gels and squeeze it into his mouth .... If

I do this a half hour after he is asleep he usually does not even know and is

in very deep sleep... If I wait too long he seems to be in a lighter sleep

and wakes... It is how I have been doing this for a long time. I use the

tocterernols which are supposed to be the best and also more expensive

kelly

How is it going with the metals and mylean stuff?

Tracie,

If my memory serves me correct, you are the guru on supplements aren't

you? I have a question. I have started on Omega 3 capsules because of

their anti-inflammatory properties and heart protection, but do you know

how much would should be taken.

The chiropractor told me 1200 mg per day (EPA/DHA 300 mg per cap) as a

preventative. But she is cute, and blonde and healthy. Any ideas?

Thanks,

Terri
