Guest guest
I had the first part of the DS done on June 18. After reading some of the awful stories from peoples hospital experieces I thought I would tell you mine in case anyone will be having their surgery with Dr. Elariny at Fairfax Hospital. I arrived at the hospital right on time at 7 am ( for 9:15 surgery ), having left Richmond a little late at 4:40 am. I was not nervous at all just anxious and even kind of giddy. I was still getting rid of Mag Citrate unfortunatley and that was my only concern. I went to the pre surgical sign in area and was greeted kindly. I only waited about 10 minutes until a RN called me into a room with my dh to go over my procedure etc. She was a large italian woman who was great, we joked and picked on men, especially my dh who was being a little weird ( I guess he was nervous ). There was a scale in the room and she made dh go out so I could weigh myself. I was told to wait back in that waiting room and they would call me she said that it would be a while since they had to get all the 8:00 people out first, but it was less than 15 min and they called me. They took me to the pre op area and gave me gowns to change into and let me use the bathroom. While I was in the little girls room Dr. E came into the pre op room and said he was ready early. Wow that was cool. So he talked to me and dh a little and then left so I could get changed. As soon as I was changed nurses began to come in and introduce themselves. The nurse anesthesizer came and did the IV, no problem, and no pain and she was very nice. The anesthesiologist came in and talked to me ( a woman who was very nice and down to earth ). Then they gave me some valium in the IV to relax me. Well I don't know what happened after that lol, I guess that's all she wrote. I don't remember them having me move to the or table or anything. One thing I forgot I asked Dr. Elariny to put a standing order for something for nauseous because I am prone to that and thank God I asked. When I woke up in recovery they asked me if I was in pain and I didn't care about the pain only the nauseousness I felt. They started the pca pump which I didn't want because I was sure that was going to contribute to my stomach sickness. Once moved to my room they kept encouraging me to push my pump but I really didn't want to and probably only did it a few times here and there. The nurses were very kind and compassionate. They had an RN each shift, an assistant and one other person who did vitals. I never had any problem with any of them except the 11-7 RN was very abrupt and not very helpful. I called her in during the night to tell her that I had a headache and was naseous and she told me to push my pump that it would help my headaches but I knew that it would only make me sicker, when I asked her if that pca meds were making me sick to my stomach she said no. But when the morning resident came in and I asked if that was the case they said yes that is what was making me ill. So I stopped and the RN said that she would get me either percoset or tylenol and I agreed. The next morning a very nice woman came in to get me up and help me wash. She assisted me to the bathroom with whatever help I needed and washed my back for me. Later in the day they moved me to a different room as the room I was in the person in the room was allergic to flowers and my dh had brought me a very expensive arrangement and wanted me to be able to have them. Dr. E came in the afternoon ( after finishing another DS patient that day) and sat and talked for a while. He discharged me but it took some time after until I left. I didn't care because we had a two 1/2 hour drive home so I wasn't anxious to leave. They took out the catheter and the iv and said I could go. I asked them to please bring a large wheeelchair and they didn't, so I told them to try again that I needed a bigger one and a few minutes later they showed up at my door and announced " I have the big wheelchair " I said to my dh " oh just announce it to the whole hospital, lol " Oh well some people just don't get it. They wheeled me out all the way to the car, as we were parked right outside the exit. So overall my experience was great, no complaints. Guest guest
Keeping in mind that I'll be at Fairfax Hospital for my eventual surgery from Dr. E. I'm grateful that you were kind enough to share your experience. I would not have met Dr. Elariny on Thursday if it were not for you and I'm extremely grateful! (My update from consult coming soon) Re: My surgery experience---Very very long At 1:15 PM +0000 6/23/01, kathysyear2001@... wrote: >I had the first part of the DS done on June 18.
