I can't drink an ounce of orange juice or any other fruit juice without dumping big time! Darnit. But I do recall this about iron & vitamin C -- when I was a kid, my dad had chronic nosebleeds and bruised easily and badly. His regular doctor didn't think anything of it, but when he went to his chiropractor, that man immediately said " you need iron, and vitamin c, and you need to take them together and every day. " So Dad started a regimen of an iron supplement (I have no idea what kind) with a glass of orange juice every morning, and his nosebleeds and bruising stopped within a couple weeks and never came back. Now that he's diabetic and orange juice really affects him, he takes his iron along with a chewable vitamin C tablet, and he's still got great iron readings (he gets a lot of labs done every 6 months for various reasons.) His current doctor thinks his iron looks great for a man his age who otherwise doesn't eat all that healthy. While we're on the subject of iron -- I have no insurance, and therefore no labs. Would it be entirely immoral and wrong for me to go to the next blood drive I see, just to see if I pass their iron screening? I figure if I pass, they can have their pint, and if I don't, I'll know I need to supplement. Is that a horrible thing to do? ~~ Lyn G

Guest guest
I know this has been talked to death and I have looked in the archives already, but I am in some serious need of iron. I was borderline anemic for about 6 months and then plunged below 11 about 4 months ago. I am SO tired. I cook with cast iron, I eat liver, I eat dark leafy greens and I even started the liquid supplement Floravital (I know it is illegal, but all the other things were not helping!). My dr threatened me with an iron supplement if my numbers didn't rise, so here I am...my levels are stable now (at a little under 11). They need to get back above 12 (14-16 would be fantastic), but they cannot continue to fall. I am about to have IVF done and I must get my numbers to normal for a pregnancy. So, I am stuck and need to know what some of you other woman have used when you are pregnant. I have avoided iron supplements for about 2.5 years while on SCD, but I really need something. Help. Guest guest
Alyssa, I have spinach raw in a smoothie or salad. I eat other greens quick cooked with a little bit of oil and salt and pepper because otherwise they are too bitter for me and I WON'T eat them. I tried juicing them, but that doesn't work either (well, the juicing works, but I cannot get them down because the smell and taste makes me gag) > > > I cook with cast iron, I eat liver, I eat dark leafy greens and I > > even started the liquid supplement Floravital (I know it is illegal, > > but all the other things were not helping!). > > > How do you eat your greens? > > Peace =) > Alyssa 15 yo > UC April 2008, dx Sept 2008 > SCD June 2009 (restarted) > Rowasa enema 1x daily >

In fact, low B12 can cause pernicious anemia. . Folic acid is extremely important for pregnant women. A government site I just saw said that "pregnant women need 400 to 800 mcg of folic acid in the very early stages of pregnancy often before they know that they are pregnant" and "a pregnant woman should continue taking folic acid throughout pregnancy."  That alone could help your fatigue a lot. Do you get, or give yourself, B12 shots? (The shots are often the best alternative because they bypass the digestive system, and a lot of Crohn's people, anyway, can't absorb B12 properly.) And you could take a folic acid supplement. I just also read in several sources  that iron supplementation in people with Crohn's or colitis can really exacerbate the disease and cause oxidative stress (the guy explained why; I'll try to hunt down the initial source with the explanation, but haven't found it back yet). n-- Now available. Guest guest
The last test number I could find tonight (I have the more recent ones somewhere...) from 12/01/09 do not have a number for ferritin, but I have 3.72 for RBC 11 for Hemoglobin 32.5 for Hematocrit All of these are below " reference range " numbers, some more than others. I have my whole history in front of me starting at July of 2008 and the numbers have steadily decreased over 18 months. Never once have they gone up or remained the same. I am just panicing a little bit...I just don't know what to do from here. Thanks,guys.. UC/C-Remicade SCD since May 07 > > Hi > > A iron level does not really tell much. Guest guest
I had my folate, Vit D and VB12 tested in September to get baseline numbers to go by. Folate 585 and VB12 was 690. I take a B complex every other day from Freeda and 800 mcg extra folic acid everyday with my other vitamins because we have been TTC for a while now and I wanted to have my vitamins covered. My dr says I cannot OD on folic acid and recommended I take 1200 daily and whatever my body doesn't need or use would be excreted. With my multi vit and the B complex every other day, I more than meet that recommendation with my 800 mcg additional. I know taking iron is a BAD thing. Should I push for an iron shot? I can deal with low energy, but if we are having IVF done and I need iron to sustain a pregnancy, that is a whole other thing, YKWIM? (and just in case anyone says I need to get my health under control before becoming pregnant, ALL of my drs, including my GI and reproductive endocrinologist are on board with this. I am not young, we have no children and our time is running out ( I married late, so its not like we put off having kids for other reasons and we have tried for 7 years on our own unsuccessfully). It is either now or never. I am in remission with my UC/C and other than the iron, I am in good health). I know a baby requires iron from the mama, so I am trying to get my body ready for that. I just need to know the safest way for me to do it, if it can even be done) > Lack of iron isn't the only cause of anemia. You could inquire about it. (They sting, and can leave a small stain on your skin, but that's no big deal.) I also was given a blood transfusion on a couple of occasions when nothing else was working. Have you though about taking LDN? It helped me amazingly for my debilitating fatigue -- within five days of taking it. And it'll sort out your immune system so you would likely be able to make better use of the nutrients you are getting. There's no issue at all with taking during pregnancy; in fact, there's a British doctor who specializes in using it for fertility related issues and says it's helpful during pregnancy as well.n>> (and just in case anyone says I need to get my health under > control before becoming pregnant, ALL of my drs, including my GI and > reproductive endocrinologist are on board with this. Guest guest
I would love to try LDN, but I cannot use it while on Remicade. However..that situation might change in the near future and if I need to, I will find a way to get the LDN. I have read that after you stop Remicade, you have to wait 60 days before using LDN. Guest guest
Make sure you're not just using spinach all the time. The body needs variety of greens - if you have, for example, spinach everyday you're at risk for negative effects. It's a good idea do use other greens in smoothies - books like " green smoothie diet " are good sources for recipes that include other types of greens and fruit juice combinations that won't be bitter. I use the Complete Book of Juicing for juice combinations and I've been very (pleasantly) surprised at how good it tastes. I'm not a fan of the bitter flavor either. Plus you'll get a greater benefit having them raw (like in the green smoothies) than cooked. If you can tolerate eating raw veggies outside of the smoothies I use collard leaves (without the stem and shiny side with the food on it) as taco shells and regularly make various versions of kale chips in the dehydrator. I hope you find something that works soon! Guest guest
I would really recommend the B12 shots. I had twenty years when I could eat absolutely NO protein and my doctor put me on B12 shots, with folic, and also the first few years, with iron (because I was always bleeding, it seemed, in the peri-menopausal years). DH has gotten very adept at giving me the shots but if I had to, I would learn to do them myself. Now I am past menopause so I don't include the iron but I still take the shots at least once a week. In fact, it gives me a little energy boost that day so I often try to time it for days I have to go out to the dentist or something. You might investigate doing all three of these, because intra-muscularly I THINK the iron would bypass the gut, I think it would have to. It did seem to help me in the days when I couldn't eat a bite of meat. Also, can you/will you eat beets? They are of course a veggie source of iron so not as good as meat, but the nurse back then told me that although they don't have much iron it's a particularly assimilable form. Every little bit helps.
Guest guest
i'm borderline anemic - with spinach/steak but just got 1st shot mon - will give them to myself or with hubby's assistance - every 2 weeks now eileen I'll give you a little tip on the shots at home. DH is a very logical engineer. He analyzes everything. Including where to give me my shots. He decided that probably if he shoots me in what he refers to as " a fat ripple " the fat might have fewer pain receptors than muscle. And you know what, I think he's right! Of course the needle goes on down in further but at least when it starts out it's less sensitive. He's done it both ways for my comparison and I vote with him. Guest guest
I have spinach raw in a smoothie or salad. I eat other greens quick cooked with a little bit of oil and salt and pepper because otherwise they are too bitter for me and I WON'T eat them. I tried juicing them, but that doesn't work either (well, the juicing works, but I cannot get them down because the smell and taste makes me gag)That's a bummer the smoothies aren't helping! That worked for me. Seems like juicing would be good too; have you tried juicing other fruit with the greens? Apple and grape juice are really good =) I hope you find something that works! Peace =)Alyssa 15 yoUC April 2008, dx Sept 2008SCD June 2009 (restarted)Rowasa enema 1x daily
