Guest guest
We have had a horrible time with Joey falling lately. And when he does fall he catches himself with his forehead. Never his hands!!! He has gotten really hurt doing that, and I am afraid the next time will be ever worse. He has had 3 concussions. Even today he trips over his teachers foot and lands right on his head. Is there a way we can TRAIN him to put out his hands? Has anyone seen this in their child? I'm sure it is a motor issue, which he is behind on. Any help would be great!!! I am ready to make him wear a helmet every where we go. Thanks!!!Tamara
Guest guest
I had the same problem with my son.his occupational therapist said it was lack of a “protective reflex”. For it was a sensory issue. It was adressed during his ot sessions. Jill Fisch SCAD Family Edgemont, NY How do you get your child to catch themself with their hand when falling?? Guest guest
Hi Tamara! Maddie used to do this all the time, and she finally started breaking her fall (well, most of the time anyhow) when she was around 3 1/2-4. We had a great PT who would bring a great big therapy ball and put Maddie on it on her tummy and SLOWLY roll her back and forth while placing her hands out in front of her. This was a big task, because Maddie does a lot of "fisting" with her left hand, so we couldn't hardly get her to open it, much less catch herself with it. She also used to have major issues with her vestibular balance, which has also improved with therapy, but at the time she could tolerate very little motion that she wasn't in control of. Things have greatly improved for her- she still falls, but more often than not she can catch herself or stop the fall altogether. Guest guest
Hi, Could he be having drop seizures?... they can look as if a child is tripping but really isn't... If that isn't it... you might want to talk to both your physio therapist and occupational therapist... there are some exercises you can do to increase your child's reflex abilities... Good luck, Nettyfairgrovejoe wrote: We have had a horrible time with Joey falling lately. And when he does fall he catches himself with his forehead. Never his hands!!!
