I'm not a " support group " kinda gal. Don't go.

Went to a few ... can't do whinners (sorry, no insults intended). Suggested

we have a local group just for " Graduates. " Maybe then I'd attend, but,

again, can't do whiners.

This is my support group here. I love you guys. Four years prior to WLS, I

was a daily lurker, 22 months post-op, still daily lurker/participant.

Well Sheila.....I have only ever gone to two support meetings and both were

total bombs. The first one I got into a little " spat " with the speaker

because he was insisting that there was nothing done to intestines during a

routine RNY (and not ONE of the couple hundred people there argued this GOD

Doc)........and the 2nd one turned out to be a total propaganda meeting for

a plastic surgeon. Both were located at local hospitals.....one of them did

have a nice spread of bottled waters and coffees. Friends and Family were

welcome at both!!!! P.

I have heard several times that those people who are most successful at

losing their weight, and keeping it off, not only practice the " rules of

the tool " , but also stay involved in some kind of support group. I reached

my goal at 12 months, have kept it off every since (I'm at 17 months

now). Although I don't feel I need as much support now as I did that first

year, I still have questions and concerns that pop up every now and

then. Plus, I think it is helpful to stay focused and remember where we

can from.

I suppose some people could get confused by the differences in programs but

most people should be educated by their own surgeons and know what to

do. I know this problem firsthand. I had my surgery out of town and can't

attend my doctors support groups. Yes, we all have a lot of the same

issues, but, I can tell you there are big differences in the programs

different surgeons have set up. Some recommend protein drinks, some don't,

some want you on liquids for a certain period of time, others don't. In

the beginning most people are filled to the brim with questions about how

the surgery will be done, what to eat, what to take to hospital, how to

deal with eating out, etc. It seems the questions are never ending. But

now I don't have as many questions, but rather need the understanding ear

of others who know how to deal with life after WLS. I have been

apprehensive to attend the support groups in my area, because the surgeons

have a different approach (protein drinks, counting grams of food, etc),

but I think now that I am this far out, I am already accustomed to my

program and won't be swayed or confused by those things.

Mr doctors support group has bottled water on ice available.

Meetings are held once a month in a conference room at the hospital. Many

in the group get together for dinner at a local restaurant prior to the

meeting, and some will hang around afterward and socialize.

Hope this helps.

Hello,

Hi again Caryl

Should we start our own support group and see who else is interested since there

is nothing

at Santa that I am aware of.

I am in the Lifestyles class now and it is great, but a group that is focused on

just the gastric

surgery would be better.

Hi, I just got back from the Santa Clara support group. It was real good, but

quite a distance

to go. I believe that it is good because there was a registered dietian who is

the gastric

bipass dietian. So we told our stories, but she was able to give us good facts,

not myths

passed from paitent to patient. I think that is important. Since the Santa

Dietians

are not supportive of the Bipass, where do we find someone that will have the

right

background and be supportive?

Read books, and where you have your surgery like Fremont there are dietitians there you will see for a year or so after surgery.
