An idea might be to contact UCP (united cerebral palsy). Ours has all types of equipment to use. I have also seen in my area where people with disabilities get service dogs. They might be able to tell you where to get equipment and the right kind of harness. These service dogs are awesome. they get adopted and trained.

Surely someone can refer you to a place for equipment. Not sure about just any dog.

I just found out about an organization online called pets and people...they help you train your dog to be an assistance dog and then you can take your dog there and let them take the test and then they can wear the vest into public. We were just given a little golden pup after someone found out about our family and have been using him to help our autistic son calm down at the end of his rages. Good luck!

Hello!

I was wondering if any of your children have a dog for your child who helps with certain tasks? I just adopted a dog from our local shelter and I was interested in training her to help open doors and also I am looking for a harness for the dog with a handle and bar on it so my son can walk with her (use her like a walker) does anyone have any ideas? thank you

My son has an assistant dog. We got her through NEADS in Princeton, Ma. My son was had to go for a week training to learn all her commands. She wears a service dog vest when we go out which was provided by needs. NEADS has also been known to train dogs that you already own, to be a certified service dog. I've seen dogs from NEADS that use the vest, and bar. You may want to contact them. I'm sure they would be able to answer all your questions. They have a website www.neads.org. Canine for Disabled Kids is also part of NEADS. They fund the dogs that are places with kids. They also have their own site, just punch in Canines for disabled kids. Also just look up sites for assistant dogs. I found a Working Dog patch on a site, but forget which one.
