God of grace!!

hello.. just finished speaking with karen at mt. sinai..you may

remember that she had to go back 10 days post-op for emergency

surgery to fix strangulating hernia..they did it open and also

removed part of her colon..no one has told her why..still pain

increased..ctscan ordered.. unable to have ctscan for several days

because of equipment malfunction!..they were taking her down again

tonight..still has not seen gagner..her mom called pomp..he stopped

in to see her this morning..he said doesn't know if she has another

hernia, but definitely has infection..ordered antibiotics iv

piggyback..she still has not received them..iv came out and no one

has time to put it in..rn on floor is on third back to back shift and

is exhausted..K's legs are filling up with fluid..she alternates

between talking and crying..was hyperventilating during night and had

another reaction to pain meds..cannot get through to patient care

rep..and still she is trying to talk me out of going to spain!..but

that is the topic for another list..anyway, she absolutely believes

that having private duty rn's would ease her situation, but she

doesn't have them..so her advice to any of you contemplating mt.

sinai is to book the rn's if you possibly can afford it..aides can

only do personal care kinds of things..her aide was sleeping when we

spoke today!!!..and karen was so sweet, she said how exhausted the

poor aide was from dealing with her!..maybe the percoset talking..i

feel so helpless..her mom is quite elderly and cannot really help

her..her brother has been to see her, but works long hours so can't

come often..also k. doesn't want to burden him with this.. would like

to figure out if there is anything i can do for her, but she said

just let her call me in the middle of the night if she needs to..of

course..but then what??..she also said i should call and try to get

them to give her the antibiotics..have never done this long distance

before..and never advocated for someone who is not a family

member..will they talk to someone who is not her family?..PLEASE,i

need and would welcome any suggestions..and, of course, she could

certainly use some prayers right about now..thanks for your

help..best regards..nancy fissel

My heart goes out to - all that suffering and not much help.

Bless you for keeping in touch with her and also let the list know

how she is doing. Unfortunately most of our hands are tied. I

personally don't know what to do to help - other than prayers, and

they do help.

Since you asked, why couldn't you call Mt. Sinai and say you are her

sister. That's not really a lie, we are all sisters and brothers.

They would have to listen and do something. It's just awful!!

Pls. keep us posted - and thanks again for doing what you can.

You had a freat idea about giving the staff candy. I used to do that for my

Ex Grandmother In Law. She died back in 89 and was in a New Jersey Rest Home

for a couple of years. She had a temper and would remind them that she was

paying $3000.00 a month for them to do what she wanted. We knew that she was

a good but she was miserable living in the home They were good to her but I

would send her caregivers two pound boxes of Sees Candy with a note to thank

them for all he hard work and care.

I remember my grandmother telling me that the nurses came in during the night

to eat some of that candy that I had taken her (they used flashlights)lol, she

didnt care. It is a great idea. I will remember to take a two pound box with

me when I go.Thanks for reminding me.:)

You must get on the phone immediately. Simply introduce yourself as her

post-op caregiver, and that you are incensed at the care she has received

thus far. Insist that the doctor be contacted IMMEDIATELY (as in 10 minutes

ago) and urged to administer 1) antibiotics, either assure that she will

receive the care she needs now ASAP, or arrange for her to be transferred to

a facility that can meet her needs.

THEN, call her surgeons office - if you call tonight, insist on speaking

with the surgeon on-call. Tell them that you are concerned about your

friends actual LIFE - and that they MUST take action NOW. Tell them that

you are her advocate and that if you are not given satisfactory assurances

that action is being taken, that you will report them.

If someone on the list lives near enough and is willing to go - someone

should be sitting with her 100% of the time, and also accompany when she is

taken to procedures (that aren't of a surgical nature).

Another tactic to consider - I've had to do this for my mother-in-law when

she was receiving substandard care - Put together a basket full of a variety

of little candies. Write a note to the nursing staff, and have it delivered

to the nursing station that is assigned to her care. Thank them for their

kindness in caring for your friend, and assure them that you will mention

their kindness and generosity in her care to their superiors. It's amazing

what a little bribery will work.

The immediate concern is helping .

Beyond that, a general concern is getting the Mt. Sinai problem

fixed. Are there investigative reporters in NYC or " 60-Minutes " kind

of programs that might want a bite out of this foul pie?

Maybe you could hit redial for that patient care rep

until you get an answer ! It seems only someone on

staff at Mt Sinai will be able to help at this

point. I'm praying for her !

Sharon (NY)... & not going to mt sinai !

I did call the Dr. and the hospital and said I was 's cousin. I got the

Dr. to come see her Saturday. I am trying to keep calm but it is hard.

She is going through alot and I don't know what to do except call and help

out by talking and calling. She is inpatient right now and I don't blame

her. She truly feels that she has fallen through the cracks and is upset.

Understandably uoset. Prayers and good thoughts and calls to 1 212 2411238

would help her. Ellen(pam

Ya know, maybe i'm outta place here, but karen has had

one miserable f*&%#g time........the doc could have

made it better......but not one person bad mouths

him.....well now I know he's God......how come Dr. Ren

gets all the bs for one patient who probably had

abused her own body to the point that it didnt work

properly?

I'm as great a fan of Dr. Ren's as anyone; she just got me through a dicey

period intact, and I'm still pre-op. I also feel, unless investigation

proves otherwise, that she mitigated rather than caused Deb's condition.

HOWEVER, that doesn't mean you should attack Deb for " abusing " her body. Not

all of us who subscribe to this list have " low metabolism " ;a good percentage

of us (and I'm including myself in this group!)got here because we " abused "

our bodies through indulgence, stress eating, and all those other behaviors

that sent our BMI's sky high. Let's try not to get personal here!

I'm going to put on my moderator hat for a sec...

My reading of the problems that had led me to believe that

there were nursing and beauraucratic issues, poor communication, and

nonfunctioning hospital equipment involved. I don't recalls ever

seeing any implication that her surgeon made a specific human error

that caused 's suffering. Unless you consider not being

proactive enough a " human error " . In that regard, nobody can argue

that the surgeon bears responsibility for the patient and she be held

ultimately accountable.

By contrast, whether it be right, wrong, good, bad or indifferent,

the issue with Dr. Ren is that she allegedly did make a human error

that had nothing to do with " red tape " or poor patient aftercare or

followup.

I certainly understand the desire to defend one's surgeon, especially

if you have a high regard for the skill and care that you personally

received. But it's also important to acknowledge when problems occur

and try to analyze why and how, determine if those problems were

realistically preventable or correctable, and how severe those issue

are in relation to patient well-being and ultimate recovery.

I think overall in this support environment, we should try to be kind

to each other and refrain from personal attacks. In fact, the list

rules specifically prohibit personal attacks. Please try to abide by

this rule.

That is a good point , perhaps though it's more the hospital that is the

problem. Wasn't she also at Mt. Sinai? I think the " doc " was on vacation,

didn't seem to complain much about him...or perhaps I misinterpreted?

Dr Gagner is good it is just the aftercare and the care in the hospital sucks plain english,i think as a nurse myself they need to set up a specific floor and train the nursing staff in bariatric nursing care..just my thought on the subject..

Excuse me? The patientin question had the gall to have a

cholecystectomy years before her DS, Ren sliced through the blood

supply to her pyloric region lysing the adhesions from the previous

cholecystectomy, yet YOU say she " probably abused her own body to the

point that it didn't work properly " ? What fantasy world do you live

in? Ren committed gross negligence.. suffered mostly at the

hands of the support staff, not the surgeon. You are way out of line

here, and only showing your total ignorance. If you don't possess the

mental capacity to understand a situation, kindly refrain from

commenting about it.
