Guest guest
does anyone give their child NAC? If so what form of it do you use? RX? over the counter. I have seen that it has been shown to have adverse effects if given with metoclopramide(Reglan)> Any help would be appreciated. Dawn
Guest guest
N-Acetyl-Cystein I did a search on this, and it sounds interesting. One challenge I see is that we already have an immune system that is so powerful that it now is attacking healthy tissue. What many of us have learned the hard way, when we take supplements that enhance (strengthen) our immune system, we are giving it permission to keep attacking us. This is why we are on IMMUNOSUPRESSIVE Treatment. We have to blow out the immune system so that it stops attacking normal tissue. I don't know anyone on this site that hasn't looked into herbal remedies, vitamin enhancement, mineral therapy, and all the other alternative care,-- acupuncture, physical therapy, every medical speciality for each of the individual body system that they are having problems with. For me, since the right toe doctor doesn't do left toes, I need another specialist. And another-- and getting these guys to talk to each other is the most frustrating part of this disease. That and the fact that so many of our MD's are still remembering that the Merck 1954 manual said this was no big deal, and that it goes away on it's own in 80% of the people that have it, and that if it doesn't , treat it with prednisone, and then wean the patient off, and give it a few years, and when the sarc raises it ugly head in the other 20% of us, get em back on pred. When it goes systemic and to our brains in the 5%-10% of us in that 20% group-- wave goodbye, because there isn't a lot that medicine can do. If you are lucky enough to get a doctor that saw an article that said this could be a problem, and that MTX or Plaquenil or Cytoxan may help, you're ahead of the game. If you can educate them with the articles you have here and other sites at your disposal, then you may get on Imuran or Enbrel or Cellcept or Remicade. And these don't work for all of us. What living with this disease has done for me, and I've had it now for 16 yrs, (I've lived with chronic pain for 24 yrs- that may have been the original insult) is that it was trial and error finding a combination that works for me. I do know that when I went on the herbs and tinctures that made my immune system stronger, my sarc also took off and become more systemic. My message here is to be very very careful with any of the herbal, antibiotic therapies (see FSR) to try to beat this disease. What does help with it, is to be able to exercise even minimally, watching your diet and hydration, and getting the rest your body tells you it needs. That at least is the issues you can control. I strongly advocate pulmonary rehab programs that teach you how to breath and exercise with pulm issues, and cardiac rehab for those of us with heart issues, and dietary counselling. Just do the best you can, and don't beat yourself us when you can't do what you used to do. Taking it one day at a time, Tracie NS Co-owner/moderatorGet a sneak peak of the all-new AOL.com. Guest guest
Tiodatt,*Thank you* for mentioning this!!! N-acetyl-cysteine is really a major 'keeper'. Major.I don't think that I have ever seen any negative side effects reported for NAC and I have seen at least hundreds, maybe even thousands of papers each with a new and different positive use for it. It does occur in the diet in some foods, and it protects against thigs as diverse as gamma radiation (yes, it would be of huge use in nuclear war or terrorism situations, write your congresspeople) and hearing loss due to loud noises (it helps prevent it) My thinking goes that a lot of these diseases cause cell death and the cell death causes a huge increase in the toxins that are given off by other cells that remove the dead cells when THEY die in the process.. and in all of these cases having more GLUTATHIONE is really, really useful. (NAC is a DIRECT precursor of glutathione) NAC is really a super antioxidant, and for anyone with lung illness of any kind its also super useful in helping clear the lungs by promoting healthy mucus secretion. This might help people with sarcoidosis as well. I know that the NAC has kept SO MANY of my various health issues at bay that I take it (500 mg) three times a day.. morning, noon and night.. (BTW, that is the recommended dose for people with health issues - it lasts around 6-8 hours so people with lung problems may want to take more or more frequently) I was very sick when I started taking it, and even though I remained sick, I noticed an improvement when I stated taking it. It helped give me the strength to get out of that place.ASK YOUR DOCTOR.. more and more of them are beginning to know a lot about NAC and recommend it.. They may thank you for telling them about it. (if they are smart enough to Google it.. ) Its record is really amazing...Another similarly useful supplement is alpha-lipoic acid, but some people do have reactions to that. (A very few.) Guest guest
Tracey,From what I can find on Google, some doctors, clinics DO recommend NAC to sarcoidosis patients - in varying doses.. But I don't know any more than what you see on Google and the net, thats how I found out about it too..
