The orange oily discharge is the fat coming out of your body. I get this too

when I eat alot of fatty foods, but when I don't, it's not so bad.

I have good days and bad days eating. Some days I feel like I can eat a lot,

and some days I can barely swallow a bite. When you are eating, can you eat a

whole taco salad fast like you used to, or do you graze, and eat it over an

hour? I find that when I eat, it takes MUCH longer than it used to. I can

take a couple of bites, what a few minutes, then a couple more... etc. When

you are full, definitely push your plate away, being overfull is such an

unpleasant feeling!

Hi all,

I'm new to the group and I've been lurking for a few days. I have a

few questions for fellow post-ops.

I'm nearly 6 weeks post-op. Up until almost a week ago, I was only

able to eat tiny amounts of food ... about 2 oz. (which I know is

normal). However, lately I've been able to eat larger amounts. I'm

not talking just 3 or 4 oz. I'm able to eat a whole Taco Bell taco

salad (without the shell, of course) - if I remove most of the

lettuce. Tonight for dinner, I ate a whole banana and a few peach

slices. I didn't feel sick or too full and I'm wondering if this is

normal. I don't want to stretch out my stomach too much, as this

would defeat the purpose of having the surgery. I guess my question

is this: how much is TOO much? Am I supposed to just stop when I feel

full or not trust my stomach to tell me it's too full? Also, at first

I noticed tomato products bothered me, but now I can eat salsa.

What's going on here?

Overall, I'm feeling ok - having some " down days " sometimes

(physically and emotionally), but otherwise ok. I've noticed quite a

bit of (ahem - trying to put this delicately) " orange oily discharge "

in the toilet - along with some gas (which is slightly painful at

times). Is this a temporary thing or will I have to endure this the

rest of my life? I know I should consider it a small price to pay for

losing my excess weight, but it still concerns me.

If anyone here can help me, I'd really appreciate it. :o)

Thanks,

Mindy, OH

Thanks, Kim :o)

I do eat verrrry slowly ... yes, I graze when I eat my taco salad. I

take one bite, chew it well before swallowing, then wait a few

minutes before taking another bite. Well, at least I know my pylorus

is functioning properly! :o)

When you say that the orange oily discharge is the fat leaving my

body ... is this unabsorbed fat or my own body fat? Because I'm

really not eating much fat at all.

Mindy,

I do believe that it's the fat your body is not absorbing. There are several

other posts on this subject further back, maybe a few weeks ago. You may want

to check them out for more information. I hope it will help more!

Hi Mindy,

I caught your other posting about the delicate matter and noticed that you were

from Ohio as well. Dr. Hess did my surgery in July of '99. To try and help you

with a few of your questions..

with regards to what you are eating, my situation was a bit different. Although

I was told to start introducing new foods, I was really nervous about trying too

much too soon. At six weeks post op, I was basically eating shredded chicken,

cottage cheese, cheese, and scrambled eggs. I was afraid to vomit! My portions

were small, but I found myself eating more often. I also ate a great deal of

soup. When I did introduce more " normal " foods, I really payed close attention

to how I felt. When I started to feel full, I waited a bit and then when I felt

hungry, I ate again.

Tomatoe products, breads, pastas, and salads really bothered me. Now I eat

everything. I think it is the process of getting your system use to eating the

foods again. For me, when I would eat pasta, I would get really bad stomach

aches..but I would eat it now and again. Now, it is fine.

I asked Dr. Hess the same question about the oily discharge. Ok, I cried

thinking that this was what my bowel movements were going to look like for the

rest of my life. The oily discharge, according to what I have learned, is due to

the amount of fats in what you are eating. I have not had a problem with this

unless I really overdo in the fats department. As far as the gas, I thought I

was having a serious problem the first time I tried soda. I wanted my husband to

take me to the ER because I hurt ssooooo badly. When the gas passed, I was fine,

I don't drink soda though...some don't have a problem with it.

I hope I was able to help you out. If I can answer any other questions..don't

hesitate. BTW. I live in Sandusky and several of the other group members who

live in the BG area..and some who live as far away as Cincinatti have gotten

together for dinner...we have to do that again...would love to have you join in

on the fun:0

OK, I'm coming up on 8 weeks.

Same for me, though I ate more than you did initially. Others have

reported similar experiences. So, I think that it is " normal, "

whatever that means.

I think we all have the same fears. i know that i do.

yes.

Your pitifully short alimentary limb of intestine is coming up to

speed and beginning to handle the load that all 23 feet of intestine

used to process.

Again, " normal. "

Welcome to OPEC! Yup, many of us have that. And, if you pass gas

while not on the toilet, you risk soiling your garments. So, you may

want to think about using a maxipad, oriented to the back orifice,

to protect your clothes and your dignity.

The veterans assure me that it gets better, and indeed, mine seems to

be moderating somewhat. But, I also understand that if you

over-indulge in a fatty meal, you can expect an encore of oil

production (it's the fat that we do not absorb because of the

DS--it's a feature, not a shortcoming).

small price.

Best,

Steve
