Guest guest
Hi everyone, I am a new member of the group. So far, the posts that I have read have already been very helpful. Thank you all. Some background info on me: I was diagnosed with Crohn's 6 years ago. I had one terrible year of antibiotics, prednisone, and anti-inflammatory drugs. I stopped the drugs and stopped eating wheat, yeast, and dairy for about one year. I went back on the dairy and simply limited my bread/pasta intake after that. I was in remission up until this past October. I am still flared up now with pain, gas, and a delightful abcess (new symptom to me). I am planning on starting the SCD tomorrow and I have a few questions. I apologize for the length of the post. 1. I have never experienced diarrhea as a symptom of Crohn's. I have had distension, pain, mucous/blood, nausea, dizziness, B12 deficiency, but no diarrhea. In BTVC, many of the foods that can be added after the intro diet are only to be added " after diarrhea and cramping subside " . There are constant mentions of diarrhea throughout the book (and every other CD resource). Since I don't have diarrhea, I feel like I could introduce a lot more food after the initial intro period (which I plan to do for two days). Is anyone else out there in the same boat? 2. Do I need to eat everything on the intro diet? I made yogurt, and bought ingredients for chicken soup and gelatin, but I don't understand why I would need to eat DCCC and make Cheesecake to eat during the intro period. I assume it's just to add something tasty for anyone on the intro diet for more than a couple days (I had planned to do the intro diet for only 2 days). I just want to make sure it's okay to nix a couple things. Has anyone out there done the intro diet this way? 3. I cannot find Dry Curd Cottage Cheese anywhere I have looked so far. I went to Whole Foods (in NYC) and that location did not carry it. There were calls made to other locations in Manhattan and no Whole Foods carries it. I also checked two Food Coops and a Farmer's Market. No luck! I am going to call around tomorrow to locate some. I refuse to believe it's not available in NY. I intend to find a place to order it online, but is there anyone in NYC who has a source? Thanks in advance for any help! AP

Plenty of people, but the point is not to rush. You introduce things slowly so if you do develop symptoms at a certain point, you know precisely what caused the reaction. > > 2. It's called Friendship farmer's cheese. They have it at Fairway, and probably every other supermarket besides WFs (though not trader joes). It's in a white rectangular package with blue lettering. It's absolutely no problem to find it in NYC. Just not at a Food Coop and the farmer's market. Where do you live? Mara, UWS.
Guest guest
Hi! Good Luck with the diet! I live right across the border in NJ and find DCCC everywhere. Check back at Whole Foods for Freinship Farmers Cheese. This is the brand name that my store carries. I highly doubt that a store in Montclair NJ would have it and not NYC. They may have just not known exactly what to look for. Also, it is usually by the cottage cheese/yogurt isle and not next to the cheeses so maybe they looked in the wrong place. Hope this helps. I also do not have CD with D. My symtpoms are pretty much like yours but with C (constiption). I had to intro foods very slowly to make the gas/pain/bloating/mucous subside. When I would eat someting too advanced the symptoms came back immediately... sometimes as soon as it hit my stomach. I had to take the diet very slowly to alleviate my symptoms. I still have bouts of C, like right now, but I did eat an illegal a few weeks ago (bread pudding) and am still recovering from that. Please do not introduce foods too fast. I almost didn't do SCD when I first started it in Sept 07 (right after my diagnosis) because I took it too fast and my symptoms actually got worse. Darned nut flours. > 2. I just want to make sure it's okay to nix a couple things. Has anyone out there done the intro diet this way? I couldn't tolerate the cheesecake on intro. My intro was chicken soup, gelatin, hard boiled eggs, scrambled eggs, hamburger patties and lots of colby jack cheese. If I ate more than a teaspoon of yogurt, I had a lot of pain. I was finally able to tolerate a teaspoon or so after a couple months on the diet. I'm assuming that it caused major die off and until my bugs were under control I couldn't eat it. When I was eating yogurt over the summer, I could tolerate the recommended maximum of 3 cups a day. It took a long time to get there though. > 3. There are plenty of New Yorkers on the list that should be able to help. Friendship Farmer's DCCC is a legal variety. If you can't find any, I think they'll ship it to you. I didn't have DCCC for the first time until a couple months ago when they finally opened a Fresh Market here in Baton Rouge. My Whole Foods will not carry it. They don't even want to try to help... jerks. Misty Kimble CD - no meds... in a mini flare due to eating an illegal SCD - 2 years
Guest guest
There is a place online that you can order and have it shipped, I do it this way as there are no stores in my area that carry it. Guest guest
AP – I think Elaine just states that the intro diet is a suggestion, so it can not hurt to start that way and slowly introduce foods. Regarding, DCCC…double check with WF again, because I had asked 2 different people at mine (Maine) and they both said said they do not carry it. I was asking for “Dried Curd Cottage Cheese”. But when I asked a 3rd person, and mentioned “Farmer’s Cheese” and noted that WF seems to carry “Friendship” brand in every other product – that rang a bell and THAT person brought me to a different section of the store – forget what they call it ( but it’s not where cottage cheese, yogurt, butter is) and there was the Friendship Farmers Cheese! Guest guest
Hi , I live in Westchester, NY, up here I find DCCC at Stop n Shop and another major food store (A&P ?). In the city I sometimes find it at Whole Foods. Last weekend I got some at the Union Sq one by the feta. You'll have to look around and read labels because anyone I've ever asked didn't know. D'Agastino on University and 11th St. has always had it when I've been there, I think that's by the yogurt/ cream cheese. Hope that helps! Guest guest
,In answer to your question #1, I have symptoms very much like you decribe, gas, abdominal pain, bloating, constipation © and occasional bleeding (. I have never been definitively diagnosed, either. I have IBD, that's all the diagnosis I've gotten from 3 different GIs, although I probably have a mild case of Crohn's. You might be able to tolerate a wider range of foods after the intro diet, but keep a food diary and track your symptoms. Everyone is different. After 16 months on the diet, I've found that I'm lactose and casein-intolerant, at least for now, and that a lot of my previous symptoms were related to that. I've definitely seen improvement on the diet, though. I think I'd be a lot worse off without it. --
