Guest guest
Anyone give their children RX Iron supplement? I have been "unsuccessfully" giving them to Carsen for a while now. They must be REALLY bad. He refuses them in a full size drink which it calls for. As you can imagine I've wasted of lot of water, juice and iron drops. After I resorted to giving them to him in a medicine cup mixed with water/juice (one drop at a time)......he screamed forever and acted like he was trying to get it out of his mouth (like it was hot). He did get some fine bumps on his tongue. So, he may have had 4 full drops in all since I've been giving them to him. Any good suggestions you might have on getting him to take the iron drops, I'd really appreciate. His very iron deficient. His hem. says it's iron deficiency anemia that hadn't "yet" shown up on his CBC. He had a full iron study done and he only has 9% Saturation! That's better than 5%, which it was initially. He's pale and tires very easily which I'm not sure which one of the two is the contributor - the iron deficiency or neutropenia. Those drops must be VERY VERY bad. He's sooooo good about taking meds., even the nasty ones. These must be especially bad. Looking for any suggestions. You must drink a lot with thes iron drops too.... Thanks! Guest guest
--Hi Krystena I haven't given the iron drops orally but we've had iron deficiency problems too. never absorbed it so it was a waste. gets IV iron and that has worked really well but lots of kids are allergic to it. Oops, I remember, my second child took them for a while. I think that some brands worked better than others. Have you tried brands and generic? Iron is pretty cheap. The drops are more concentrated then ferrous sulfate elixir, which is prescription. Ferrous sulfate elixir contains alcohol. Could that be what he's saying is burning his tongue? As far as the iron drops, have you tried giving them in some sort of puree rather than juice? Or maybe in hersheys syrup? That always worked for yucky meds with my other kids. I think iron drops are the med that stains teeth Maybe that's the reason for giving them with a full size drink. The staining comes right off if you scrub the teeth with a paste of baking soda and water (almost as much fun as getting the meds in!) Depending on his dose, maybe you could crush an iron tablet and give it in applesauce? Check with your doctor because iron is poisonous even if he gets just a little too much. Different iron preparations can have different mg strengths and vastly different amounts of elemental iron depending on the type of pill. Good luck! Guest guest
I was wondering again what your son's levels are. I just found out today that Zipporrah is also low in iron. The restless leg syndrome is assumed to be caused by the low iron levels caused by malabsorption from the dumping syndrome and lack of oral foods. Zipporrah's levels aren't too bad yet but still low. Her iron numbers were 53 (they like 70 and up), fer. level 7 (usually from 142-7), and 10.5 (they like 12 and up). I was told it would be wise to supplement iron but thought I heard you guys talking about being careful how much you give and that it could matter what form you give it in. Any help here would be greatly appreciated. After Dr. Whiteman gets back in town I want to TRY to talk to him about the issue as well as her last labs which indicated many different abnormal acid levels. Darla: mommy to Asenath (4) Mito, CNS Vasculitis, strokes, migraines, seizures, G-tube, hypotonicity, disautonomy,SID, dev. delays, asthma, chronic vomiting... Zipporrah (10 mon.) Mito, strokes, SID, GERD, 100% G-tube fed, asthma, trach issues, disautonomy, hypo & hypertonicity, migraines, possible seizures, dumping syndrome... Luke (16), Leah (14), Rachael (12), Isaac (10), Tirzah (7), Kezia (3), & Marquis (2) (some with Mito symptoms) Re: Iron deficiency anemia > --Hi Krystena > I haven't given the iron drops orally but we've had iron deficiency > problems too. never absorbed it so it was a waste. > gets IV iron and that has worked really well but lots of kids are > allergic to it. Guest guest
Darla, My son is iron deficiency, also caused from malabsorption. I give him iron I buy in a health food store. It's called Floradix-Floravital Iron and Herb liquid formula. It also has B & C vitamins. It says easily absorbed,non-constipating,and yeast an gluten free. I have been giving this to him for about 5 years, with no problems. I even tried it once when I came up slightly anemic, and it worked great. The taste isn't bad either.
