Guest guest
"When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?" Eleanor Roosevelt I have recently completed training as a hospice volunteer and made my first visits last week. I'm what is called a "friendly visitor." I basically keep folks company, listen, read to them, sing, whatever they need. I can also provide respite for caregivers who need to go to the store or other errands, or just time to themselves for a couple of hours. Right now I have 3 clients in a nursing home and one 94 yo lady at home, whose granddaughter takes care of her. The granddaughter runs a home daycare, so I'm available to stay with her grandmother in the evenings. I've been searching for something I could do, not only for others, but to give me a reason to get up & dressed. This is perfect for me, as I can sit with my feet up for most of the time, don't have to strain my brain too much, and have flexible hours. The hardest part so far is the paperwork! We have to fill out a form for each visit. When the weather is nicer, I can take the clients outside if they are able. One of my clients is an 86 yo man who was pretty withdrawn the day I met him, when the volunteer coordinator took me around for sort of an orientation. He's the age my dad would be now. I learned that he used to drive racecars. My dad also raced cars, back in the '50's in Arizona, what they called jalopies. I have two trophies he won for fastest qualifying times--76mph! I also have some old b & w photos of his car. I had previously put two of the photos on the same page--one of my dad & his brother the day before a race, with the car looking really sharp, the other taken after the race, with the car all banged up & dirty. I took these pictures to my first actual visit with . He perked up & showed some interest. I left the pictures there with him. I'm going back tomorrow to visit again. Dang it. I just got a call from the neurosurgeon I was to see on Thursday to evaluate my back. They had to reschedule my appt. for 4/12. Another month to wait. Uuuuuuffffffff! Guest guest
Good for you! The best way to take our minds off our own problems is to concern ourselves with somebody elses. I guess once a nurse always a nurse, hey.... hugs S.Rose wrote: "When will our consciences grow so tender that we will act to prevent human misery rather than avenge it?" Guest guest
Rose, that is so wonderful, what a perfect thing for you to do with all your background, I have thought of something like that too, but just haven’t done the follow through. It will be a good thing to do for someone so caring as you Rose!
