Guest guest
Maggie, If the sleep apnea is significant they need you to get used to the machine a few weeks before surgery as you will be using the cpap in the hospital and they need you to know how to work it. That was the case with my hubby. he also needed to get his oxygen levels up a bit..... Guest guest
Maggie, I was in the same situation. I was diagnosed with moderate apnea. In fact I just barely made it over the numbers where Medicare covered the CPAP. Being use to the CPAP is very important for you post-op. Since you will be groggy from medication, your responses will be dulled and if you stop breathing you could die. I seem to remember someone on the list tell of an episode recently when they were waiting after a test for transport or something and they dosed off. The next thing they remembered is waking up in the ER. I believe they were taken off some of their pain med after that. So get that CPAP and start using it. You may be able to get rid of it after a few months as you lose weight. Rita Black10/17/2000 First Consult. Dr.MacuraOpen BPD/DS 4/23/20014/23/01 - 400lbs. BMI 635/1/01 - 391lbs. Guest guest
My hubby had 3 weeks to get used to it....as it turned out he didnt need the machine after surgery and hasnt to this day! But as a precaution they do want you on it, used to it and ready to go for recovery after surgery. They do not use these cpap machines in the hospital for other patients except on an emergency basis so you always need to bring your own. This will all be over with before you know it! I'm wondering about this...I never was tested (My appt is the day I'm actually having surgery) so should I mention that I may have sleep apnea when I get to Spain? I'm not going to postpone my surgery. I think as long as someone watching is aware and (and most of us have it so I would think they know to watch us afterwards) my friend with me knows...I should be okay. ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 59 Surgery date 7/24/01 going self pay - Dr Baltasar Spain Check out the Bellingham Support for WLS WWW.lookin2bthin.homestead.com
Guest guest
Thanks. I hadn't thought about oxygen levels or just plain getting used to the machine. I was thinking it wouldn't make a difference if I had it two weeks or two months since it doesn't cure the apnea. Also that since they are scheduling at least a month away anyhow, if I get the machine in a week I'd still have it for three weeks prior to surgery. I guess they just need to be sure I have it. Hopefully the results from the night in the sleep lab with the machine will be in this week. Then they can write the script and I can get started with it. Getting a little anxious to get this over with:-) Maggie BMI
Guest guest
you must mention it to Dr Baltasar.....you must Oh I most definitely will tell him...I just have never been tested for it. I was never told to get tested for it. My dr just said I most likely had it. When I get there, I have all my medical stuff on a sheet of paper, the meds I take, when I was diagnosed with things, problems I've complained about and things I've had in the past. I know I'll be nervous so I thought I'd write it all out and he can just have it for his file and notes. Guest guest
So, I was told in future – let them know that I have “exceptionally, extremely severe obstructive sleep apnea†so that they take it seriously. Hmmm I dont know how bad mine is or if I really have it. I'm sure I do but its only been recently that I've had problems that make me think I do. I was having trouble sleeping, waking with headaches etc. Now for the past month, my dr has had me on Topamax which is a anti seisure med but makes people lose significant weight and its working great...I constantly forget to eat...so I've dropped enough weight that my mom has noticed it. I've also not been waking up with headaches and such. I'm not trying to diagnois myself...but whatever the situation its improved. Anyhow...I will let Dr. B know I've had discussions about it but not been tested and that I want to be treated as if I have I have it severely just to safeguard myself after the surgery. Thanks for the information...I really appreicate it. ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 59 Surgery date 7/24/01 going self pay - Dr Baltasar Spain Check out the Bellingham Support for WLS WWW.lookin2bthin.homestead.com
Guest guest
Thanks, I really hadn't thought about just getting used to the machine, I was just thinking either you have or you don't:-) I have read that apnea can cause life threatening problems, but since it is something I would have gone on not knowing about if not for WLS, I guess I just didn't take it that seriously. As for getting the machine, it's a bit of a wait up here. I had the second sleep lab test just over a week ago and it takes at least two weeks for them to send the results to your PCP. Your PCP then writes the script so you can get the machine. I was really lucky to get in the sleep lab when I did. They had a cancellation and I got in June 27th. They were actually scheduling for August at the time! I am getting anxious to have the surgery, but I am lucky that I am not still waiting for the test like I could be! Guest guest
Morning headaches are a definate sign of sleep apnea and high blood pressure! Mike had that too......he was also very sleepy during the day even after 8 hours of sleep at night unknown to both of us, he was not sleeping in rem......which explains his excessive tiredness during the day back then... Since I started seeing my new PCP, and started on high blood pressure meds, I no longer have high blood pressure (well, I guess I technically do but its under control), I no longer have swollen ankles and feet (is that high blood pressure or that I've dropped a few lbs???) and its been a month or better since I've had a headache! So who knows...I suppose it could be something other than apnea...but in any event...I will still bring it up...its better to be cautious than ignorant!!! ~~* AJ *~~ BMI 59 Surgery date 7/24/01 going self pay - Dr Baltasar Spain Check out the Bellingham Support for WLS WWW.lookin2bthin.homestead.com

Guest guest
Hey AJ, I’ll share a little bit about my wrist surgery I had last November. I’d had my CPAP for about a month when I went in – it was just a day surgery to remove a mass from the back of my hand. My surgeon knew that I had sleep apnea, it was on my medical records, and I told the nurse that was assisting me, the anesthesiologist, and then my surgeon again once I was in the OR. I woke up several times during surgery (it was one of those not really asleep, but not really awake kind of anesthesias) hearing this buzzer going off – my oxygen levels – even though I was on an oxygen line – had dropped dangerously low in some instances and in others, I’d stopped breathing all together. It happened about 8 times during the 1 and ½ hour surgery. It continued happening in the recovery room – actually really flipped them out – and then when I was returned to the day surgery area – every time I’d doze off, I’d stop breathing. Not only did it seriously flip out a bunch of people (everyone but me – I’m totally used to it!), but it also meant a longer stay in the hospital, etc. So, I was told in future – let them know that I have “exceptionally, extremely severe obstructive sleep apnea” so that they take it seriously. dina Dina in Aloha, OR Age 37/BMI 61 Waiting for my consult with Dr. Hoping my new insurance will cover it all.... -----Original Message----- From: Judie Hensel Sent: Sunday, July 08, 2001 1:30 PM To: duodenalswitch Subject: Re: Re: Sleep Apnea AJ, you must mention it to Dr Baltasar.....you must! Guest guest
The hig blood pressure meds do take the head aches away but remember its only pallative.....it doesnt solve the problem except temporarily until they have to give you more drugs and stronger drugs over time. The swollen ankles and feet.....hmmm that comes off with the weight so its a benefit of the surgery. My ankles are so skinny now its unbelievable lol SOunds like sleep apnea to me but Dr Baltasar will be able to tell you that for sure..... Guest guest
I am just about even with your husband- I had 58 episodes in an hour. For years I thought I was just lazy that I didn't have the energy to get up and do things. I am just so tired all the time. At least now I know why. It is good that you understand. I get the feeling my husband thinks it is just another sickness that is overdiagnosed as the " disease of the day " . He hasn't really said anything either way, it's just a feeling I have. I have a feeling I have actually had this to some degree even as a child, so I don't hold a lot of hope that it will go away, but maybe. I have always been low energy. I'm thinking it may be worth lookinginto but not sure what I'm looking for... ThanksSharon, The symtoms vary. I didn't really have any, I thought the test would be negative. I was shocked to find that I had sleep apnea. The only problems I had was that if I slept on my back, I would snore loud and wake myself up. I did have to get up several times during the night, but thought that was from water pills. I wasn't sleepy during the day or have morning headaches. A year earlier I convinced my husband to be tested. He snored loudly and stopped breathing. Quite often I would nudge him to get him to start breathing. He was very tired during the day and would take naps morning and afternoon. Hope this helps you Rita

Guest guest
Maggie, the day he came out of surgery they said he didnt need it anymore.....the night before surgery was the last time he used it! His BMI I believe was around 50 pre opt Im thinking perhaps using the bariatric bed might have helped his breathing somewhat and including the fact that the bed was always raised and we have an adjustable bed at home too.....not sure though! Anyone have any theories as to why? > > > > > Mike was never tested for it nor told he should be either.....it > > was > > > > just something I picked up on the boards that would give him a > > good > > > > comorbitity for the surgery....sure enough, he had it! Guest guest
It probably didnt go away instantly like that but perhaps the bariatric bed helped to the point he didnt need it. His surgeon told him he didnt need to use it anymore... He used it one time in the motel after discharge and said it didnt feel like it was working like the other times so he quit using it.....he didnt snore anymore after that. I have no idea why or how it happened that way just that it did. The cpap now sits in the closet!
