The epidural for post op pain management is quite different than an epidural for anesthesia or delivery.

I had mine placed the night before surgery, went back to the motel and slept. After surgery I was able to be up and active with the epidural. No numbness of limbs-- it was not used for anesthesia, only post op pain. The theory is that they block the upward transmission of pain impulses to the brain during surgery and therefore the pain response post op is considerably less.

From: Cinloo59@... I had an epidural with the birth of my son....I think most moms in labor opt for them...it hurts when they start it....putting it in but not horribly...and you can move but not a great deal. As far as pain relief...they do the trick. I had some residue back pain for months after, but again, that when away....Ask the doctor though if you have a choice....

When I was in labor and getting an epidural - yes, they did do a local

first. Didn't feel a thing.

Did they give you a local before the epidural?

Yes.. actually I had a peripheral IV placed and was given a benzo like

medication that calmed me and helped me feel absolutely fine throughout the

placement.

In order to resolve the problem of catheter displacement, they " tunneled "

the tubing under the skin and made it extremely secure. I wiggled, tossed

and turned and did all sorts of things and it remained secure.
