Guest guest
Dawna Are you eating more dairy (yogurt and/or cheese) than you have previously? I found after a few months of having even a small amount of yogurt regularly that my joints all became inflamed, severely, so I had to stop eating dairy. You are in the worst phase of detoxing, so your sciatica could likely be related. Since developing my digestive dysfunctions, my gastroenterologist has frequently wanted to send me to a rheumatologist because of the joint issues I've developed (major problems walking, lots of hip and knee pain, IT band inflammation and stress). From what he has said there is often a connection, chronic inflammation I gather but haven't really done my research on this connection. I haven't gone to a rheumatologist yet because my neurologist and orthopedicist seem to feel my walking difficulties are due to my neuromuscular and spinal issues (as test results have confirmed) and I definitely feel these connections [sigh]. But the overlap of gastroenterology and rheumatology is an intriguing one to consider and might explain some symptoms. Kim M. SCD 6 years > > Anyone else experience this? Guest guest
Rheumatic symptoms are related to immunity and inflammation. The GI tract is a large regulator of the immune system. Right now, your system is going through some changes. I got a weird rash at about the same time into SCD. It was probably die-off. Take warm epsom salt baths, hang in there, and it should be better. Try not to take many OTC drugs for the pain as most of them contain illegal additives. PJ > > Anyone else experience this? Guest guest
Hi Dawna- strictly speaking, sciatica is pain experienced from the Sciatic nerve, a long nerve supplying the leg, and originating from several nerve roots on the low back. Pressure on the nerve in some form, usually as the nerve roots come out between the vertebrae, from either a disc bulge or herniation or stenosis (tightness of the space available to the nerve root) is the common cause. Following SCD could not make this better or worse. If you are also suffering from rheumatoid arthritis and feel joint pain from that diet can definitely affect the amount of general inflammation in the body. You can easily google examples of pro- and anti-nflammatory foods, but as an examplr the fats you eat are important, getting a high ratio of omega 3 fatty acids vs omega 6 is helpful. Following SCD could not make this better or worse. Yes. It most definitely can. Sciatica is one of the things that can be symptomatic of UC. (not sure about Crohn's.) I used to have terrible sciatica before I was diagnosed and had raging UC - so for me when I get sciatica that's an indicator that all is not right. In fact, the last week and a half, I've been getting over my experiment with *legal* lacteeze, and just this weekend had a minor bout of sciatica. > >> >> Anyone else experience this? It used to happen occasionally on only one side. 11 days into SCD and I had MAJOR rheumatoid flare with BOTH sides of my hips/legs experiencing major sciatica, Well, you are having gut instability- the first month in particular on SCD creates a lot of havoc what with some bacterial populations dying off, and releasing their noxious toxins, which can often create flare conditions. You didn't say what condition you have in your email, so it's hard to know what to say in particular. I would stretch some, and eat a lot of broth and maybe some circumin pills - which are both great anti-inflammatories. Make sure not to over stretch. In my case, I took the weekend off of exercising and Monday and Tuesday. Went back to dynamic intensive yoga on Wednesday and Thursday and now I am fine, at least with the sciatica. Endorphins help - so if you do any other kinds of mild exercise - or even walking, that would be a good way to help yourself. But if the sciatica is flaring, I wouldn't work it too hard. Also, use tylenol, not advil, which is counterindicated for gut issues. Mara
Guest guest
Hmmm... seems there's some debate. I forgot my other theory: 4. I'm so backed up with stool that it's pinching my nerves!!! Guest guest
Try not to take many OTC drugs for the pain as most of them contain illegal additives. They do. But for me the last couple of years I am non-functional without my Tylenol, so I have it compounded. Ibuprofen, too, as I need that when inflammation rears up worse than usual. It's expensive, but can be done.

Compounding is good -- but keep in mind that Ibuprofen, which is an NSAID (Non Steroidal Anti Inflammatory Drug), is not recommended for people with gut issues. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund

I only use it when I must to avoid really heavy meds and I cannot use it very long. I think the LDN is helping my " range of pain " and am looking forward to getting rid of both of them.
