Guest guest
Interesting Facts You Should Know.... If the current trends continue, 100% of the U.S. population will be obese by the year 2230. (Competitive Insight, October 1996) About 34 million U.S. adults (25.7%) are overweight. (HCIA National Inpatient Profile, 1995) Approximately 15 million men (24.2%) and 19 million women (27.1) are overweight. (HCIA National Inpatient Profile, 1995) As one's weight increases, so does the risk for many diseases linked to obesity: heart disease, diabetes, certain types of cancer. (NHANES II) "In 1990 the direct cost of obesity-associated disease in the U.S. was $45.8 billion, and the indirect cost of obesity was estimated to be $23 billion. Therefore, the total economic cost of obesity was estimated to be $68.8 billion in 1990." (The Cost of Obesity, The U.S. Perspective) The trend in the prevalence of overweight and obesity is upward. The guidelines note that from 1960 to 1994, the prevalence of obesity in adults (BMI>30) increased from nearly 13 percent to 22.5 percent of the U.S. population, with most of the increase occurring in the 1990s.
