Guest guest
Hi. I have a 12 y/o daughter diagnosed with Crohn's last spring. Her scope showed several ulcers (H Pylori ruled out) and inflammation throughout the GI tract, but she did not have C or D. Her main symptoms were fatigue, weight loss, nausea nad belly pain with occasional blood on the t.p. We have gone the traditional med. route (currently on 6MP and we did a short course of prednisone) and though we have seen improvement in her ssumptoms, she is still inflamed (sed rate is 45) and not growing in height. We are seriously considering SCD but are wondering if anybody with similar symptoms has found success? I think it would be hard for us to tell is she is tolerating foods in the different stages as she can pretty much eat anything right now without having any obvious symptoms. So, I think we would be tempted to skip or drastically shorten stages because of this. Can we do that? Also, has anybody dumped their medicine before going on the diet? I feel like the 6mp is probably masking her symptoms. Thank you in advance. Josie -Mom of 12 yd Crohns 6mp Wisconsin

It's obviously a useful drug, like prednisone is, but also like prednisone, definitely not something a person would want to be on for a long time, and especially not a child. That's a major reason I would encourage you to get her on the diet, then to soon start to taper of the 6MP. Actually, the symptoms you describe were essentially my symptoms when I first had Crohn's 30 years ago, and I developed other symptoms along the way. Fatigue was a big-ee. But whatever symptoms people have, and however well a given drug works at first, it doesn't work indefinitely, and nor should any of them be taken indefinitely because of their serious side effects. So the diet is the best alternative. (I wouldn't rule out LDN either, if after a while on the diet you feel she needs something more. She may not, but if so, that would be something effective that can be taken indefinitely without bad side effects.) n-- Now available. Guest guest
she is still inflamed (sed rate is 45) and not growing in height. We are seriously considering SCD but are wondering if anybody with similar symptoms has found success?Hi Josie,When my son started SCD in 2002 he was considering intestinal surgery for Crohn's Disease. Even on numerous medications and after a ten day hospital stay he continued to lose weight and experience pain. However, within a few days of beginning the Specific Carbohydrate Diet he improved dramatically. Today, he has no symptoms of Crohn's Disease, is off all medications and has gained weight. All his lab results are normal. These include electrolytes, cholesterol, LDL (was low), HDL (above average), iron, SED rate, and C-reactive protein (a marker of systemic inflammation). After one year on the diet, he had an Upper Gastrointestinal Endoscopy and Colonoscopy and the gastroenterologist found NO evidence of Crohn's Disease or any other inflamation including his fistula. He still remains mostly SCD but does eat out and have non- SCD foods occasionally without getting any symptoms. He is also still med free!I would still start with the intro diet and introduce foods slowly. Keep a journal so you can track any foods that cause a reaction.Take care,Pat
Guest guest
Take the diet slow. The meds are masking her symptoms and that doesn't mean she will tolerate more advanced foods. Just try one food at a time for 2-3 days. If there are no symptoms, try something else. If you move too fast in the diet, it will not work. I am walking proof of this. I have CD an my major symptoms were constipation ©, gas, bloating, extremely sharp, tigtening, burning pain through my entire digestive system, fissures (which led to a little blood on tp), fatigue, inability to sleep. SCD fixed everything but the C. Most of the time I'm regular now, but I still go through bouts of C. Almost overnight everything but the C was gone. My doc had me on Entocort, Pentasa and pain meds. Those drugs were actually making my symptoms worse and my doc said I had to get on Humira or Remicaid or I would be facing surgery in a year. Those drugs or diagnosis were not an option for me, so I restarted SCD and did it right. Misty Kimble CD - no meds SCD - 2 Years So, I think we would be tempted to skip or drastically shorten stages because of this. Can we do that? Also, has anybody dumped their medicine before going on the diet? I feel like the 6mp is probably masking her symptoms. Thank you in advance. > Josie -Mom of 12 yd Crohns 6mp > Wisconsin >
