Guest guest
I searched on Medline for articles by Dr. Pories. I doubt that I found them all, as I only came up with 54, which is a low number for a professor of medicine who received his MD in 1955. Still, among those 54, only one article was a followup on bariatric patients. (Several did concern how diabetes was seemingly controlled by gastric bypass, but that's different.) Here's what gets me. The one followup study I found covered only FOUR YEARS! Regardless of that, I think that the guy's real problem is that he's an academic snob. Note the last line of his piece on the DS, especially the last seven words: " Accordingly, I believe that until we have better data on its efficacy and safety, the biliopancreatic diversion with duodenal switch procedure should be performed only at institutions that are conducting rigorous clinical trials. " AH... " institutions that are conducting rigorous clinical trials. " I think that the word " institutions " is a code word for " MEDICAL SCHOOLS " -- you know, where ACADEMIC doctors hang out. And, I think that's why he's so quick to dismiss Dr. Hess, Dr. Rabkin, and Dr. Baltazar. Their studies couldn't possibly be " rigorous clinical trials, " because they don't work in the right kind of " institutions. " Having dealt with quite a few academics, I hope I am wrong about this, because I've never found any creature more intractable than an academic who is waiting for the " right " proof of something. ): Tom

Dr. Hess's office and BG are very unassuming and small townish. Of course this was one of the things I liked and did found it a plus in my book. I had very good care from all involved in my surgery.
