Guest guest
What kind of adaptive stroller,or wheelchair do ya'll recommend ? What are the pros and cons of stroller versus wheelchair? Which would ya'll recommend ? Logan is 7,and weighs about 43 lbs. He would use this for trips to places,,like the fair, mall,,etc. He doesn't need it for everyday use, since he is homeschooled. Any websites you might have, would be helpful. Guest guest
We just got a Tiger from Snug Seat. It's very nice, we've used it a lot all ready. We have a base in the house that Sheldon uses for eating/other things like play doh and a lighter base that stays in the car for trips to doctors, etc. Insurance paid for it completely. Guest guest
Kim, we have been refused entrance to an exhibit as they did not allow strollers (before we got a wheelchair). Our old wheelchair had the large wheels which allowed Billy to move himself. This was great for independance. Even though he could not motor himself all day he could get a little bit away from adults. Also the wheelchairs tend to be a little higher so that the kids are not only looking at peoples knees. This allows more eye contact and interaction. Twana > What are the pros and cons of stroller versus wheelchair?
Guest guest
we have a convaid cruiser stroller (www.convaid.com)...it is compact and lightweight. and it can adjust to have a proper fit as our daughter grows. it folds like an umbrella stroller would, but a little bigger. our insurance paid for it completely. hope this helps. bethany mom to brennan 7, palmer & anna grace (leighs) 4 > > What kind of adaptive stroller,or wheelchair do ya'll recommend ? This one does not have big wheels. I did not want that option because when needs her Cruiser, she is too tired to push herself around. I think that is important because when she gets older and possibly needs a scooter, I don't want insurance to say that she always got around pushing herself around in the past. I have heard that others have had problems with that.
Guest guest
I know a lot of people on this group have really liked the stroller type rather than the wheelchairs but for us, we opted for the wheelchair. We bought the Invacare Orbit Tilt in Space Pediatric Wheelchair. You can see it at the site listed below. www.phc-online.com/action_orbit.htm (Ours looks much better than the photo though as you can choose your own colors. Asenath's has a red frame and red cushions. The cushions are VERY comfortable compared to many of the stroller types as well. Some parts are black as in the photo. The small wheels make turning very easy and you can get larger or smaller with either back or front wheels.) Asenath's Brain Injury Waiver paid for the whole thing (not Medicaid or insurance) so we didn't have to pay anything. Asenath is able to walk too, but for distances it is a must. The reason we went with the wheelchair is because we often go to Mayo Clinic and after a couple of days there, or after sedation, Asenath needs something more reclining. She is able to sleep in her wheelchair and it is very comfortable. Steering and pushing is very easy as well so there is no strain as strollers tend to become with time. Asenath weighs about the same as your son due to steroids and I love the grow with the child ability of wheelchairs too. She will be able to keep this one for multiple years before growing out of it. No need to worry for years! We absolutely love our wheelchair, but it is somewhat heavy to lift and takes a bit longer to put together. I can put it together in less than a minute so not a biggie for me, but some want the umbrella fold-up capacity. Wheelchairs also take up most of your trunk space which could also be a factor. I do have a VERY small car (Malibu) and it fits in fine, but not much room for other things. I recommend getting together with a wheelchair specialist and look at their products as well as surfing the web at different special needs wheelchair/strollers. You will get a good idea what is best for you and your circumstances. Best wishes! Let me know if you have any other questions about our wheelchair. Guest guest
I just wanted to thank all of ya'll,for your input. It helps so much to have a group of friends that really understands. I have read all the suggestions,,and I have decided to call the case manager,,and see what she thinks would be best, for Logan, and what the insurance would pay for. I think a wheelchair would be the best choice,as far as how old he is,,and his embarrassment at being in a stroller. On the other hand,,a stroller is so much easier to 'swallow'.It wouldn't seem so disabled. Then,I have the problem,of trying to decide if he REALLY needs it. I mean,he does when we go long distances,,but how often do we do that ? I guess it is best to have it,just in case, huh? I don't know which one we will do,,but I just wanted to say thanks for being there for me.
