Guest guest
Hey everyone, I'm new to the whole crohns world and SCD...need some help. I'm 46 and was dx'd with crohn's 3 months ago although my crohns has been active for well over 7 years, its only active in my large intestines. I was given 5ASA meds - it made things much worse. So I've sworn off doctors and switched to SCD and soon (I hope) LDN as well. I started on the intro diet but some info is conflicting. The intro diet has honey it in but the book mentions avoiding honey until stools are formed. Cooked veggies should be SLOWLY added in after the intro diet, 5 days, or is it after stools are formed? Both are mentioned in the book. I'm on day 15. Although my blood has reduced a lot, my diarrhea is no longer severe and cramping is gone - I'm no where close to formed stools. Is this within the range of normal? Does this mean don't add in veggies? What about honey? I live in Europe (I'm American though) where DCCC is not available so I use homemade yogurt with added honey plus I add honey to my 2 cups of green tea and several cups of mint tea. Mistake? I already tried adding in several cooked veggies but now I'm rethinking this and have reduced my cooked veggies - I eat mostly animal - meat, chicken , cheese and yogurt at the moment. This is when I feel my best but can I expect to have formed stools on such a diet? Also, in the first week I had really bad die-off. Does this imply there is also a candida factor or can die-off be strictly from crohns?
Guest guest
Yes, you are in the range of normal. You are seeing improvement after only 15 days and that is great. It sometimes takes a while to get good formed stools. SCD can be a slow process, sometimes with ups and downs, but the trend should be upward overall. You can start adding small amounts of bland well cooked veggies. Keep a food diary and add foods a little bit at a time- slowly and one at a time. Just because something is legal, does not mean you tolerate it. I could not handle carrots at first. A good (but not absolute) guide is on pecanbread.com. Note that this is for ASD kids who are non- dairy, and this is not necessary for adults with GI issues if you tolerate legal dairy foods. It's hard to find DCCC in some places in the US as well, so we can use dripped yogurt. Honey is legal, and OK to use, but some of us are sensitive to carbs. You could try cutting down on it to see if this helps. Too much honey, or too much of anything- legal or not- can cause difficulty. Die off does not necessarily mean candida. Welcome to SCD and this board. There are many people here who have been on SCD a long time and can help you. I have been on it almost 10 months. Guest guest
PJ, that was such a big help. Few more questions. Why can't I have straight yogurt, why does it need to be dripped? Is there a easy way to know for sure if candida is or is not a factor? Guest guest
Hi Robin, You don't have to drip the yogurt, but some people tolerate it better because dripping it removes some of the galactose, which some find harder to digest. Dripping the yogurt gives it a similar consistency to the DCCC so you can substitute it in recipes that call for DCCC. Other than that, if you like the yogurt without dripping it, that's fine. I don't have much experience with yeast, so hopefully others will address that here. Under the " files' section in this group is a file for just starting SCD that Marilyn wrote. It is very helpful. Dry curd cottage cheese is quite solid. So when substituting yogurt for DCCC, we drip, or drain, the yogurt to remove as much liquid as possible so the yogurt has about the same consistency as the DCCC. Another reason for dripping or draining our SCD yogurt is to remove as much water of hydrolysis, typically called " whey " from the yogurt. This removes quite a bit of galactose, and makes the yogurt easier to digest. — Marilyn New Orleans, Louisiana, USA Undiagnosed IBS since 1976, SCD since 2001 Darn Good SCD Cook No Human Children Shadow & Sunny Longhair Dachshund
