I have mentioned this journal before, but for the newcomers or those who've missed this info, this is a consumer-oriented periodical published by the American Academy of Neurology. It is free to anyone with a neurological disorder and/or family or caregivers. You can also view it online, although I enjoy getting the actual magazine, as it's easier to go back & reread particular articles. The latest issue, March/April 2007, has a lot of interesting articles, including a brief mention of methadone for neuropathic pain. But there are two that many of you might like. One is on the benefits of online support groups, written by an M.D. Here is part of the article: Learn to Take Charge of Your Medical Care. The forums also change the way members communicate with their doctors. "I no longer go in accepting what is said to me. I have the courage to ask questions." etc. The only problem with this article is that it doesn't include any quotes from NS patients, which I hope to change by getting our group included in their resource list. The second article is called Avoid Insult to Brain Injury. This tells how to fight insurance claim denials. I learned a lot from this article. You can check out this issue, as well as past issues, at the website below. You can also sign up for the free home copy, no documentation required. I just called an 800# and a very nice lady took my info & even sent me the first issue, as I had only found out about the journal when reading issue #1 in my neuro's office. I highly recommend it; the articles are easily understood without feeling talked down to. There are many suggestions about alternative treatments, patient participation & power, etc. It's actually an excellent piece of work, which surprised me since it came from a bunch of doctors.
