Guest guest
Hypoglycemia occurs when blood sugars fall too low, so it's not an " in office " test they perform at the doctor's. Rather, it's an at home self test that can be done as many times a day as necessary. When I was younger, the frequency of testing was much greater than it is now, because I now know my body well enough to know when my blood sugar is dropping and I can take the appropriate action. The most common way to test your BSLs (blood sugar levels) involves pricking one of the fingers and then dropping blood onto a strip that is put in a tester and gives you a reading. I know the test can also be done with urine, but I don't have any experience with testing that way. If you want to test your child's blood sugar, your endo. should be able to provide the necessary equipment and instructions for the test. ~Hillary 21, RSS

Guest guest
Jennie, You are basically talking about the same thing, but the finger stick is the best indicator of too low or too high. Sometimes I have to buy the ketodiastix just because there are not ketostix and I just use them for ketones. Even in the hospital they use the fingerstick to check for bloodsugar. The nurses told me that they only use the glucose part to see if there is extra sugar. (Same thing in the doctor's office) If there is, then they finger stick to get an accurate reading. That is how so many pediatricians find kids who are diabetic - the glucose pad shows a high level of sugar during a routine physical. Jodi Z.
