Question Regarding Prevalence

I read this on a website linked to this site:

"Experts estimate that one in 2,000 babies may inherit some kind of mitochondrial illness and some experts are saying that the number could be as high as 1 in 1,000. 10% to 50% of these children will die before their teenage years."

My son has very recently been diagnosed with a presumably acute form of Mito...is this statement indeed a true reflection of the situation out there with Mito. It seems very high - granted they must be referring to severe cases - but still it seems a very high percentage.
