Guest guest
Hi!! My 10 year old son (Joey's brother) who has started to show soft signs of Mito this last summer, has a very weird rash. He has had it since Wednesday morning, and each day just gets worse. It looks like Someone has taken a dark red or maybe even purple tiny felt marker and dotted him all over. We went to the doctor yesterday, no strep. And it worried the doctor, which really worried us. He said it looked like popped blood vessels. He (the doctor) would run his finger over the spots to see if he could make them go away for just a split second. And the would not. He said it looking like busted vessels. He said it did not look like any rash he had seen, like the 5th disease or a Strep rash. Can a bleeding or blood disorder be a Mito issue? Has any one ever seen this? I have heard some of you guys talking about white blood counts and wondering if this can be a problem. I am VERY worried. Any help would be GREAT!!!! Thanks TAMARA
Guest guest
TAMARA, Did he think to run a blood count? If not, why not? Yes, sometimes, though, rarely, blood coutns can be affected by mito. My daughter has a rare bone marrow failure. Sometimes there can be pettechia (sp??) which are little purple spots that are signs of bleeding caused by low platelets. I would think that if the doc was really concerned about this though he surely would have run a simple blood count to check it out. If you are concerned I would call and request one tomorrow. it is a simple finger stick and about an hour wait for the results in most clinics. Don't fret too fast. There is alot of strange stuff out there right now. If I can find a picture online i will send it to you and you can compare it. Feel free to email me if you'd like to. Guest guest
Yes, that is to be a concern. It's something to do with his blood count or something. I will email my sister in law and ask because my neice has this and needs to get a transfusion or some sort to bring her count back up. I know of one other person from my summer place that had the same thing. It's a simple prick of the finger to count platelets or something. Good luck and let us know. Guest guest
If there are any other signs of infection (fever, achy joints, severe head/neck ache) take him to the ER. Not trying to freak you out unecissarily, but what you described IS petichiae, which is basically point blood spots under the skin (the tumbler test is where you hold a clear glass to the skin and push, and the spots dont dissapear, this indicates petichiae, or blood spots). it can be caused by mild problems, but it can also be caused by serious ones (meningitis, septicemia etc included) as well... if your doc did not run a blood count, you NEED to have one done asap, this isnt something to 'wait and see' with... it needs to be adressed. (or at least documetned so if it happens again they will have some blood values to compare it to). There are also certain immune problem that can cause petichiea, as well as several blood disorders... most are easily controlled, but need to be diagnosed (earlier the better!). I hope its just a mild problem, and that the doc did run a blood count! Let us know!
