Guest guest
This is a post from a Mom on Pecanbread -- re-posted with her permission. We just got back our stool culture for Mason and I will admit, I was foolish. I have kept Mason on high strength probiotics containing a few different strains of lactobacillus, but also some bifidus. This was the only thing I have strayed on for SCD. I read somewhere that even Elaine didn't know which probiotic strains really where good ones and that she went with the safest route at the time. Well lots of good research has come out that shows multiple strains are much, much better for most people and so I continued to give Mason his PRESCRIBED probiotic vs. keeping with the safest one. Well, Mason tested negative for any lactobacillus strains- there is none at all, and no ecoli either which you are supposed to have. However, he does have a significant amount of bifidus and we are going to need to possibly treat him for it now! I am just realizing how right Elaine was and is still ahead of her time. He doesn't have a large bifidus growth, but it is more than ideal. We are now going to put him on large doses of just acidophilus. I just wanted to send this out to people who think that not following SCD to the letter is okay. It isn't. SCD needs to be followed to the letter, otherwise there is more harm done than good. Guest guest
thank you soooo much for this! My FIL has been bugging DH and I to try the Primal Defense probiotics since they have lots of different strains of probiotics and are "better" than the others. I told him they weren't SCD compliant and he told me that he doesn't understand why we wouldn't want to try everything that we possibly can even if they are "not SCD compliant". I explained that taking an illegal would be shooting ourselves in the foot and would do more harm than good. Anyway...you get the point. We disagree. This email was just very timely and I appreciate it! Devorah To: BTVC-SCD Sent: Tue, January 19, 2010 4:46:51 PMSubject: No More Bifidus! Given that there are often questions about probiotics, it's always interesting to have a case study which demonstrates that sometimes a conservative treatment is better than rushing in. We all know that healing with food takes time. I don't have the option of many of the tests some of the Pecanbread folks employ as a matter of course. What I do have is more than eight years of observing myself and the capable people on several lists. I've seen, time after time, people panicking because this test or that test showed increased levels of yeast or this or that bacteria after starting SCD, and they conclude that SCD is not working. The answer, of course, is, healing takes time -- and when you're stirring the bad bugs up by depriving them of food, you're going to see higher levels. I continue to be exceptionally conservative in my attitude towards SCD because I remember that, if not for Elaine Gottschall's dedication, we would have lost Dr. Haas' legacy because a new-fangled " better " diet game along -- just gluten free, instead of gluten and polysaccharide free. I stay strict SCD, but I have experimented with things from time to time -- and each time I set out to prove that maybe Elaine was a little too old-fashioned, I end up proving that she knew what she was talking about. Guest guest
We all know that healing with food takes time. It was close to 40 years ago I saw a naturopath, who really helped me a lot to clean up my act in all areas. At that time lifelong C was my problem, don't really know if I had IBS back then or not. Anyhow, he said some people are just born with " bad guts " but that, however you got a bad one, he always said it takes years to heal and get a good gut. Certainly goes along with everything they tell us about SCD. From what I am seeing with myself in six months, it certainly IS slow. But fairly steadily in the right direction.
