Hi, I hope some of you can help me out. For the first time in two

weeks I feel really lousy. I have dry heaves and am having trouble

getting in my supplements. I think I got sick because I took 2

calcium and one iron pill late last night on an empty stomach. I am

listing below the supplements my Doc said I needed. Please let me

know how/when some of you take them. Is there a chart anyone

designed?

B 12 500 msg per day

Calcium (Citracal) 2000 mg per day (I only found 400 msg pills this

means I need to take 10 a day!)

Iron - Feso 325 mg three times a day

A and D

E and K

Multivitamin

Vitamin C - 500 mg

Is this typical of what everyone else takes? What do you take for

nausea? I have nausea now and haven't had it since surgery.

As always, thanks for your help.

That level of iron would definitely make me puke all day. I wonder if you

are very anemic and need this. I have fab iron levels and great hematocrit

and hemoglobin that are off kilter in the presence of iron related anemia.

I take no iron supplements but eat iron rich foods. I know you are fresh

post op.. I could not have taken the stuff you are taking for at least a

month post op.

Just an innocent question: Not for , but for the original poster: Are

you taking the iron at your surgeon's recommendation? I'm wondering because

Mt Sinai post-ops don't start iron until 3 weeks post-op. WE begin the

vitamin supplements (chewable multi, ADEK, chewable calcium --- not the hard

citrate pills but TUMS, VIACTIVE, CAltrate -- there is also a chewable

citrate put out by Twinlabs) but not the iron until 3 weeks post-op. I'm

sure the emphasis on the chewables and lack of iron is to allow the stomach

to heal somewhat.

I'm not saying your surgeon is necessarily wrong to prescribe iron straight

off the bat (like mentioned, you may be anemic and require such

supplementation immediately)... just curious as to whether this is absolutely

necessary so early on. The citrate hard pills *may* be irritating your

stomach --- Maybe look into the chewable citrates (by Twinlab) or even liquid

calcium.

I would mention this to your surgeon's nutritionist and see if your vitamins

can be altered so they are comfortable to take?
