Guest guest
Hi All, Do you also experience trouble with swallowing or choking on your own saliva? I initially had trouble with swallowing pills when they started treating me in January. Now it has been occasional when having coffee or I wake up in the middle of the night choking on my own saliva and coughing and it is scary. I know that they want me to go through a sleep test and it does not happen all the time. Thanks Kat
Guest guest
Hi Kat,Once in a while I do have this problem. About 3 weeks ago I was even choking on soup. This lasted 3 days. A couple of nights ago, I noticed the upper right side of my head felt sore (about 3 inches circular) and prickly and hurt to touch. After I took my morning cellcept and prednisone it started to go away...weird. Blessings,BeckyK wrote: Hi All, Do you also experience trouble with swallowing or choking on your own saliva? Guest guest
HI Becky, In Jan and Feb when I was at my worst my whole head felt wierd. The scalp felt like prickly or it actually hurt in some spots and it would come in waves That was when I was having the numbness in the left side of my face. I had lost my vision for close when it started and when they tried to take me down in prednisone too quickly then my whole left side would go numb. Now I am having the problem the last couple of days where it feels like a vice goes onto my left arm right above the elbow. I have no idea what that is but it gets scary as you do not know what is going on and you feel like you are falling apart bit by bit. Thanks Becky. KatSee what's free at AOL.com. Guest guest
Hi Kat, I said something to my gastroenterologist and he said that sarc affects our esophagus and will cause this choking problems sometimes. I do not drink hardly anything without a straw because of it and I am careful with steak & cheesesticks. Guest guest
It must be true that sarcoids cause problems with choking and swallowing. I have been experiencing this since it first started. I thought it was because they had done the broncoscopy(sp) on me because that is when I started to have problems. They struck a needle in my neck to test for sarcoids in my lymph nodes and since then I have noticed that I get choked or strangled more easily. Straws do help though. Shauna in Atl Ahhh...imagining that irresistible "new car" smell? Check out new cars at Yahoo! Autos.
Guest guest
Kat, a couple of years ago, I had a lot of trouble with this, especially with liquids & small pills. Like you, I even choked on my own saliva (like I asked my doctor, who else's saliva would I be choking on?!?). Anyway, I had a swallowing study & of course, everything sailed right down. Over time it's gotten better, whether from the immune suppressants I don't know. Now, the nighttime choking may be a different issue. I used to wake up in the night coughing & choking, feeling like I was drowning. I would cough for up to an hour before I could go back to sleep. I tried elevating my head without relief. I mentioned it to my family doctor (not my doctor anymore) & he blew it off. Then one day I was looking on a website about adult asthma & noticed a link to nighttime reflux. When I read it, I realized that was exactly what I was experiencing! I didn't usually have heartburn, but at night I was getting reflux & aspirating, so I really was drowning (sort of). Anyway, I took the info into my doctor & he agreed that was probably it, gave me Prevacid and it totally resolved. When I have run out of the med, within a few days, I'll have another episode. Now I used OTC Prilosec, because it's cheaper than my co-pay for Prevacid. I did recently see an article saying that users of proton pump inhibitors such as Prevacid & Prilosec can increase the risk of hip fracture, especially in long-term users, so you need to watch your bone density. Guest guest
Amazing how often we see that the WEIRD symptoms that no doc has ever heard of are pretty darned common amongst ourselves. Ive had choking problems off and on for the last 7 or 8 years, they did a swallowing test on me when it first started and said everything was just fine, (god do I hate that term!), so off I went to choke for another few months before it resolved itself for no apparent reason. Luckily for me it returns every once in awhile for a few days, weeks or months, just so I wont forget it I suppose. > > It must be true that sarcoids cause problems with choking and swallowing. Guest guest
I also have reflux problems. Seems to go with cranial neuropathies for some reason. Raising the head of my bed 2 inches really helped. My saliva choking was explained to me by a speech pathologist. She said if part of our throats are numb it can't sense when saliva is pooling in our throats. Most people will automatically swallow as saliva slips down our throats. Because of the lack of sensory input, the saliva pools - then we choke. -

Guest guest
Stu, I was still working when the choking started and the nurses learned to keep their distance when I was drinking coffee or even water. Without warning, I would choke & then spew for about 2 feet! They especially hated getting coffee on them, or the charts. You are right about the "unusual" symptoms that are only too usual to us. But what do we know; we are just patients. Guest guest
Sharon, have you showered him with coffee or tomato juice? That would probably stop the laughing. You know, sometimes I miss having a partner, but at least I don't have to experience the hurt & isolation of the person closest to me not believing or understanding what I'm going through. Guest guest
Stu, the same thing has happened to me, too. I had a few relatives who didn't understand how scared, angry or depressed I was because of being in so much pain and a myriad of other odd symptoms. I guess if I wasn't sick...it might sound a little crazy to me, too. Suddenly I just 'loved' to complain, I guess, though I wasn't known for it before. I wasn't known to be a liar either so why now was I overexaggerating my symptoms... But that's the kind of comments I got. Until..... they got sick. Now those same people are Soooo understanding and I think WHERE were you when I really needed you. What I got out of this is that I have to 'pay' my newer understanding forward. So now when I come across a sick person I am very concerned with their health and bring up things other people overlook because they haven't ever been that sick before. Recently when I was able to get to church and someone asked how I was doing I told them that the warm weather has helped my pain. They said they noticed a few other people with a walker and another with a cane so that must be why they are in church, too. I pointed out that for those people it is also a matter of the ice and snow, too, because of the fear of falling. Moreso than even myself who was in a wheelchair. She just looked like a light went on over her head and she said "I never thought of that before...'. They just don't get it. I sometimes wish I didn't get it either.....lol. But since I do, I guess I like to try to educate others so it doesn't go to waste....lol. Those moments when you scare the heck out of someone by some of your symptoms...is priceless....lol. I've done that a few times myself and the person usually needed that wakeup call anyway. hugs S.lizzyandstu wrote: Yup, those <normal> tests can cause problems, I have a sister in lawwho has made fun of me for yearrs becuase my tests would alwyas comeback <normal>, no more though!
