well i was just informed that anna graces left hip is " out of

socket " and she will need surgery. i do not have much info at this

time, as we were at our yearly (league for crippled children) clinic

for a checkup, they ordered the standard hip xrays and then shown

how her left hip is out of place compared to 2 years ago.

so, i am wondering if anyone has experience with any type of hip

surgery. if so, what did it involve?

we do not meet with the ortho surgeon for like a month, so i have

time to gather my questions and prepare. i have no idea what to

expect.

just curious b/c i'm so unsure.

thanks,

bethany

Hi Bethany,

Did the doctors say Grace has hip dysplasia? Both my boys do.

It's where the hip socket is too shallow and the femur head eventually works

its way out. That's what happend with both my kids. had a

Girdlestone procedure (it was not rebuilt) and Billy we just left his

dislocated (after getting his spine fused) because I didn't want to face

another hip surgery. If the hip isn't bothering Grace then I say leave

it alone! still has pain from the surgery, which was over a year ago.

The doc did do abductor (adductor? I can never remember the inside one!)

releases, but they didn't seem to help. AAMOF, Chris' OTHER hip is starting

to bother him. We have just ordered new reclining wheelchairs so the kids

can take the pressure off their hips. Unless it's life threatening, I will

not do another hip surgery!!!!!!! That is my experience. Other's may have

better ones. :)

You may want to consider seeing a chiropractor first before doing surgery.

When our daughter Leah was a baby the docs talked about doing surgery for

hers and just one visit to the chiropractor fixed hers and the docs were

satisfied. I was so thankful we took the chance on the chiropractor first

before going through with a surgery.

Beth,

Several questions pop into my mind when I read your post.

If they do the surgery do they think the hip will remain in the

socket? The mito kids with their low muscle tone to not always heal

the way most kids do.

How long is the recovery time estimated to be? Any of the " stresses "

the kids get can set them back so far!

Is her prognosis such that she will benifit from the surgery?

What is the benefit? Will this make her walk? Will this keep her

from walking the months she will be in the bracing/cast?

Some of the mito kids have nuropathy which makes them have pain in

their limbs. When Billy got a cast with his Botox shots, the first

thing he said in the morning is can I have this off? This was also the

last thing he said at night. He wanted to know what he had done to

merit such punishment and promised never to do it again. It was

heartbreaking to see a kid who never compains about anything so upset

for so long! He said it was like having needles in his feet.

Also you are going to need to be able to transport/move her with the

bracing on. You are going to need to look at some serious weight

since she won't be able to move.

We are looking at Billy's falling apart from his bone sockets too.

His hips are both out of joint by about 50%, his clavicals pop out

when you pick him up. You can feel his whole body sort of squish

together. So many of the surgeries require the persons body to

" tighten " up back around the surgery and his can't. Sorry, I am

gloomy about this maybe someone else has better experiences.
